Hello Charles, first things first,
WELCOME TO CF brother
I don't have a lot of time to talk tonight, but I wanted to tell you that it's a very good thing that you are in God's word! Do you ever talk to Him about what you are reading/listening to, not only to understand it better and more deeply, but thanking and praising Him too?
One thing that helps me get closer to God is finding things to thank and/or praise Him for throughout the day and night, not only in His word, and not only the big things, but even the smallest of things in this world too (like a cool breeze, or a warm beam of sunshine). The reason this works is that it reminds me that He is here always right here with me in any and every situation, wherever I am and whatever I am doing, such that it becomes a way of practicing the presence of God in my life (by helping me remember that He is there and wants to be part of every aspect of my life) .. e.g.
Philippians 4:6-8; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.
All of the Christian spiritual disciplines are there to help us live the Christian life effectively and for God's glory, of course, the four principle ones being studying the Bible, prayer, fellowship and witnessing.
There's a 5th discipline, one that ended up making all the difference for me (as far as stopping sinning goes), and that discipline is Scripture memorization or "treasuring" God's word in your heart. As the Bible tells us,
Psalms 119:9, 11
How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word. Thy word I have 'treasured' in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee!
I'm talking about memorizing a number of verses and passages, not chapters or books, or the entire NT itself

So, if you think you'd like to give it a try (I won't kid you, it is hard work), just let me know and I'd be happy to help you get started.
Praying for you.
God bless you! (
Philippians 1:6, 2:13; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)

p.s. - one of the main ways that we obey the command in James 4:7 to, "resist the devil", and to then receive the promise that goes with it because we did, "and he will flee from you", is by taking our sinful thoughts "captive" and giving them over to Jesus to deal with instead .. 2 Corinthians 10:5, over and over and over again, as necessary. When we do so, the enemy eventually tires of our persistence and leaves us for an easier target
