• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Need some books that look at the "I am" statements

I'm writing a paper and I need to get my hands on a few resources. Does anyone know of any books or commentaries that take a pretty thorough look at Jesus' "I am" statements in the Gospel of John?

Thanks so much for your help.
Leon Morris has written a commentary on the Gospel that is very good (so also FF Bruce), but even better is Morris' Studies in John in which he spends time on the I AM statements, but within the structure of John's Gospel, which is vitally important.

If you want tonight I can give you specific pages and other references.

Hi filo,

I have Morris' New International Commentary and also FF Bruce's commentary. But I will certainly look into Morris' other book. Thanks.

Any additional resources you can give me would be greatly appreciated. My paper requires a bibliography with 10 entries. Thanks.

Dave

PS I could only find a book titled, "Reflections on the Gospel of John" and christianbook.com. Is this the same book with a new title? It's a 760 page hardback.

No, the actual title is: Jesus is the Christ: Studies in the Theology of John, published by Eerdmans, 1989, chapter 6 is titled: "The 'I AM' Sayings", pp. 107-125. He has several good references in the footnotes, too.

Also, check out

Essays on John by C. K. Barrett.

Jesus According to Scripture: Restoring the Portrait from the Gospels, Darrell Bock, Baker.

John 1-12 Raymond Brown, Anchor Bible Commentary.

Hi There!

There's a lot of information available on the internet concerning the "I AM THAT I AM" statement...and from different sources.

I have probably 25 articles from various writers if you are interested...

The best "I AM THAT I AM" statement is the purpose of the KJV translation committee decision to use "I AM THAT I AM" over the text of "I WILL BE THAT I WILL BE"... the basis was from a Jewish Targum.

This isn't a book but James White has an article on this titled:
Purpose and Meaning of "Ego Eimi" in the Gospel of John

In Reference to the Deity of Christ

Located at http://aomin.org/EGO.html

He also devotes a chapter on this in his book "The Forgotton Trinity" Bethany House Publishers.
