That's a bit of a wide (ok, maybe not *so* wide) net there. I'll be recommending stuff outside of this sort as well, but that still fits with the atmosphere.

Gothic Metal, Symphonic Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal:
Seconding the Xandria recommendation.
Sirenia
Theatre of Tragedy
Tristania
Shadowgarden
Lacrimas Profundere
Atrocity
Grave Digger
Van Canto
Tiamat
Firewind
Lacuna Coil
OSI
King's X
Symphony X
Devin Townsend Project
Ayreon
UnSun

'Dark' alternative rock, Industrial rock/metal, Gothic rock, etc.:
[leaving out the big names here; bands like NIN, Stabbing Westward, Orgy, White Zombie/Rob Zombie, Powerman 5000, Filter, Gravity Kills, KMFDM, Ministry, Rammstein, and so on are well known enough]

[same goes for the classic crop of Gothic rock and Alternative Dance acts like Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, New Order, All About Eve, etc.]

The Birthday Massacre
William Control
The Dreaming
L'ame Immortelle
Circle of Dust
Klank
Argyle Park
AP2
Celldweller
Voxis
Blue Stahli
The Awakening
Ashton Nyte
Under Midnight
Legendary Shack Shakers
Autumn's Descent
RELESSER
Dommin
Florence + the Machine
Zola Jesus
Device
Dope
Godhead
Turmion Kätilöt
Porcelain Black
Lacrimosa
London After Midnight
VAST

Christian rock with some of the above traits:
Skillet (this hits on both, actually; the early stuff transitioned from Grunge to electronic rock to Industrial and then to the more 'symphonic' stuff they're doing now)

Other:
Royal Republic (totally not 'dark' in any way, but whatever; that's why they're under Other)
Drist
Kalafina
D'espairsray

Nice list, thanx...

I do have Klank...good stuff...and I want to get Skillet's new one, heard their new one 'Sick of it'...
Symphony X, I have...Lacuna Coil, I have....Tristania, I have...but the others don't look familiar so I'll have to do some checking...

I especially LOVE the type of music that is hard guitar and violins included...or like a metal sound with a orchestra background, know what I mean?

I have indeed heard of Derdian.

Also check out Dark Moors latest album if you haven't already.

"The City of Peace" by them is an example of fantastic Symphonic Metal.

Dark Moors..hmm, cool name...my Mom's maiden name is Moore so kinda fits lol...

Usually I check out Music Choice On Demand for groups to learn about...but I dig your list...I can check our library site...has a site that you can search ALL the libraries in Ohio...so hopefully some have many of these you've listed...

Dark Moor. Dark Moors was said just as plural.

I recommend:

http://rateyourmusic.com

Find artists on there and then look them up on Youtube or Bandcamp or Spotify.

Is the rateyourmusic a place that you can play little snippits of tunes? If not, know of any? That way to get an idea of how a group sounds? YouTube takes forever for me...I'm still on dial-up internet....*dinosaur growls in background*

No, it is a community based website. People add artists and their albums and people rate them with links to external sources. Just a good way to look up new artists through searching through genre tags.
