  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Many months ago, I started a website using MS Frontpage. However, I have not updated it in months. I am trying to update it now, however when I type the web address to publish to, I an error box that basically says it can't reach the site.

It might also help you to know that I have re-installed a different windows XP on my laptop after wiping the hard drive a few months ago as well.

I am thinking about uninstalling and re-installing the FrontPage extensions. What do you think?

Ok, I figured out that I'm probably doing nothing wrong. It is a software/server error.

I found a link on cpanel's FAQ, but I don't know how to do what it says about changing my registry.

Here is the link.

if possible, don't use a wysiwyg web page editor like frontpage or dreamweaver! they tend to abstract the creating of the web page so that you learn nothing in doing it, and then the html code they spit out is terrible, and often you can cut out up to almost 90% of it... all that extra html makes your web site slower!

if you want a decent editor, and you want to *really* learn how to write web pages, go for an editor where you can see the html code.

[shameless advertising ;-) ]
have a look at http://www.saturnlaboratories.co.za/ringhtml3.php, it's an html editor that i'm writing, and it's free.

if you need any help, feel free to ask me...

My website was not slow. Besides using MS FrontPage, I also know how to use Netscape Composer, which is not slow, but not sophisticated either.

I think FrontPage uses SHTML

you're probably on a broadband connection, hey? i'm on dialup, as is, in fact, a large percentage of the rest of the world. *that's* where the biggest difference lies... for instance, because of the java and other gunk that cf uses, it loads up rather slowly for me - whereas for you it's probably almost instant...?

netscape composer is worse than frontpage and dreamweaver.

no, frontpage does not use shtml afaik, it uses regular html (since i do use it *occasionally* at work).

i've also been developing websites for about 6 years now...

once again, i would *highly* recommend you use an html editor. also, for lessons, reference libraries and tutorials on good design, go to www.w3schools.com, and for free, standards compliant website templates, go to www.oswd.org (i've submitted a design there, and will shortly be sending another one in).

and lastly, remember to test your designs in *all* web browsers you can. do *not* just use internet exploder (in fact, switch to firefox if you haven't already - http://www.mozilla.org/). in fact, if you can get hold of a live cd of linux (knoppix, ubuntu, gnoppix are a few), and test your sites in some of the linux web browsers too, that would be excellent.

No, I'm connected at 28.8kbs. My website was not slow, however CF can be slow. I keep the CF pages on my computer so they can be used.

Recently, I upgraded to the high speed dial-up. It compresses the text, and runs alot faster. Also, it lowers the quality of the graphics to make my downloads faster (Juno Speedband).
