I was reading the bible with my 4yr old the other day. We were reading about Adam and Eve and came across the part where God says "if you eat of the tree you will surely die". And like any 4 year old, the questions start pouring in. So I tried explaining to him how Adam and Eve were created to live forever but because they didn't listen to God, death entered the world.

So in his mind he put the pieces together and now he's telling people that "if your bad, God will kill you". Oops, that's not the way I intended to get the message across. And now I have some people in my family pretty upset with me. Any advice on how to talk to him about this and also how to correct his misunderstanding?

Four is a tough age, your best bet would be to find some stories more positive and leave the "deep" thoughts topics for later. Or at least gloss over it some. Kind of like focusing on saving the animals and people during the flood not on "oh and God killed everyone else." Basically push the loving aspect of God for now, healing the sick, curing the blind, stuff like that that.

Keep reading the bible with Him. He isnt too far from the truth because the word says that all sin leads to death. Once you read more of the word with him you can teach about Gods mercy and justice and ultimately the forgiveness we have in Jesus.

I dont think you should be worried

He needs to know that God doesn't kill you, the sin does.

Obviously you don't want to give him ideas that will cause him to harm himself, but you could liken it to why you tell him not to do certain things that could harm or kill him - running into the street, sticking a finger in an electrical socket, drinking something hazardous (you do use Mr. Yuk stickers, right?), etc. Doing those things is a transgression against your will for him, which is for his good. But it's not going to be you that kills him if he goes ahead and does them anyway. It's going to be the oncoming car, the electrical current, the poison, etc that kills him. Likewise, sin results in both physical and spiritual death.
