• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I am not sure what I should do. My dd has been diagnosed with Sensory processing disorder and I truly believe she has a mild form of autism but I am having the hardest time getting anyone to listen. We had a behavior therapist come out but after that we were just brushed off even though we felt we needed more help. I just dont know what else to do but I have a hard time with my dds behavior. Also, is it important that we get an official diagnosis of ASD?

Hi,
I have aspergers *hugs*
I guess a diagnosis would be useful if you needed for her to get extra support eg at school.
For me (i was diagnosed as an adult) getting the diagnosis really helped me understand and accept myself and get more insight into why i had certain problems and working out ways round them.

However, it can also be a stigma or discrimation although i think things are gradually improving in this regard. Its also easy to fall into a pattern of thinking 'I'll never be able to do that i have aspergers' when actually if i tried i would probably get halfway and that would be better than not trying.

So i guess you have to consider the benefits vs possible problems when deciding whether to get a diagnosis or not.

Go with your gut, you are her mom and you know her best. I've been telling doctors, teachers etc for almost 5 year now and they're just finally starting to listen. My son is finally going to be tested next week. I wish I could say it'll be easy or quick but chances are it won't. Just hang in there.
