I do things a little differently...
I bought a .org.au domain which is costing $11 a year (except you pay every 2 years). The idea behind it is because my church's main site is also a .org.au domain, and the only variation on a domain name with "nexgen" in it that wasn't taken.
As for hosting, however, that's a different story. I live in Australia, but my website is hosted by Frozen Midnight - which is an American company. It costs $40 AUD a year - which is equivalent to $3.34 AUD a month... and considering the cheapest I could get hosting with a decent amount of space and bandwidth in Australia was $120 AUD a year, I don't think I did too badly... $3.34 a month for 2GB space and 50GB bandwidth ain't bad.
