Negative attitudes are still widespread, no longer acceptable to the majority in most communities, but still widespread.I agree, there have been great strides made and the situation has improved. But what's left to do is more difficult to deal with precisely because it doesn't involve prevalent negative attitudes, but self-perpetuating structures that create disadvantages. The problems are far harder to see for those outside of marginalized groups, and the combination of the real challenges and the complete denial of those challenges gives the perception that the negative attitudes are still widespread.

CONSIDER AN EXAMPLE
A young black man was murdered by older white men for the act of jogging. The trial took place in rural GA. This case was covered nationally. The country listened to the arguments. Folks expected the rural GA jury to be a hung jury or expected them to vote for acquittal. The jury had no trouble finding the murderers guilty.
This indeed shows that times have changed. The coverage and analysis also showed how much racism was still acceptable to so many.
