Were the Neandrathols given souls? Why were they created?

They weren't "created". They evolved. And I have no idea if they were given souls or not. Probably they were. Frankly, all cognitive beings, IMHO, have souls.

I don't know that much about neanderthal evolution but I believe that that is a true enough statement. But don't quote me on that.

That's definately one to ask God, when we meet him. I'm really not qualified to speculate on who God decides to give souls to when he's defining human.

I side with Bushido and ThePhoenix here. I really don't know if neandertals had souls or not. Insufficient data. I'm not even sure, speaking as a scientist, that sapiens have souls. Like Bushido said, they weren't created, but evolved from H. erectus. So did H. sapiens. Neandertals and sapiens are sibling species.

As to neandertals and sapiens both being "human", that depends on how you define "human". If you define it as only H. sapiens, then no, they weren't. If, however, you have a broader definition (as is being used by anthropologists today) where human = genus Homo, then yes, they were human but not like us.

I agree with Bushido216 and lucaspa. It may be impossible to determine scientifically whether any organisms, including humans, have souls. However, if humans do have a soul, then I presume all sentient beings do to one extent or another.

If you think that neadertals buried thier dead, wich is very debatable, then I think one can say they have a belief in afterlife wich is a good start to say they have a soul...
