• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, I forget the URL but do a net search for crazymeds. It might even be www.crazymeds.org. Anyway if your talking about natural lithium, which is a misnomer because regular lithium is natural, my advice is don't bother. It is very hard on ones kidneys has only had one human trial which was in germany in 1973, and the dosing is inconsistent.

The above URL is correct here is a little about what they say in regards to it.
Because a subsequent study, again in rats not people, found that lithium orotate is even harder on your kidneys that lithium carbonate is! Yow! Lithium carbonate is hard enough on your plumbing, I'd hate to think what this **** would do to you. The study concluded, "It seems inadvisable to use lithium orotate for the treatment of patients." This was a follow-up to the study that showed you did get more lithium orotate in a rat's brain than you did with lithium carbonate. But to get anywhere near a therapeutic dosage of lithium levels for bipolar disorder your kidneys would be in full revolt apparently.

Minor warning on www.crazymeds.org though. I love Jerod to death <he's a friend of mine> but his language on there is very crude. So if you hate cursing, you'll have a problem with his website. But he's a great guy with a lot of excellent information. And extremely funny.

Agreeing w/ poster above me that you should avoid natural lithium <generally called Serenity> like the plague. Useless stuff and expensive as all get out. A lith prescription from your doctor would likely run you $8 a month. Serenity can be $30-$40. And it's not safer.

For anti-depressant agencies, you can look at 5-HTP for serotonin or L-tyrosene for norepinephrine. Those would both be available in your local health food store. They are the amino acids that the body uses to build serotonin and norepinephrine <respectively.> You CANNOT take 5-HTP at the same time as you take a SSRI though. You can kill yourself doing that. So always ALWAYS talk to a doctor to make sure you have no contraindications.

And as with all anti-depressant type agencies and bipolar, hand over your credit card and your car keys before you start taking it lest you find yourself across the country in a manic spree. <Or is that just me?>

Yep, just learning how anti-depressant can trigger mania. More looking for herbal type mood stabilizer to take in conjunction with my prescribed mood stabilizer. Have only found one that works for me and it is unique in it's mechanism of action. If I increase my dose I start itching like crazy, but I'm still cycling more than I like at this dose. Want to stay away from antidepressant for just the reASON YOU MENTIONED. sO LOOKING FOR MOOD STABILIZR TYPE HERB OR VITAMIN (sorry for the caps) to supplement where I am at.

I'll try again in word pad and copy it over, I hope!!! Thank you for your patience!

Isn't our God an amazing God!!!! We are fearfully and wonderfully made! Amazingly complex, incredible design!! And yet with the same or similiar illness we all respond differently to the same medicine. I am bp2, develop out of years of depression. I can definitely pick up the change when the manias developed. I spend most of my time depressed with fewer hypomanias. I take Trileptal and Wellbutrin. The Trileptal (a mood stabilizer from the anti-seizure class of meds) was like a switch turning on in my brain. Color return as well as the ability to think clearer and return to a degree of life. Others I know are not helped by this med, or have horrible side effects. My pdoc would prefer if i didn't have an anti depressant, but I crash into depression without one. The trileptal at my current dose does not keep me totally from cycling and we would like to up the dose, but when we do I develop pronounced total body itching. My pdoc checked with a neurologist and nothing else out there right now has the same mechanism of action. Not even it's close relative carbemazine (or however you spell it-when I took it I had some pretty significant bleeding anyway) :( So I am looking for something that might supplement safely where I am already at.

I am also taking a regular dose of vitamins, also B vitamin complex necessary for neurological functioning. I am using fish oil 900mg/day. first time I took it, it worked incredibly well. Ran out for awhile, restarted and doesn't seem to make a differenc anymore, but I still take it. It is safe and can't hurt and might be helping and I don't realize it. i took focus factor and did the same thing as fish oil (very expensive) same results. Godd first time, not much second. No longer taking due to expense. My pdoc look at it's ingredients and we tried the inositol alone as there is research on that. didn't seem to make a difference. I have tried various herb and things during my purely depressed years all without much change.

Recently went thru and antidepressant change to help with a side effect-triggered a mania :( so went back to the wellbutrin and the side effect :( It doesn't seem to trigger manias for me.

It's always a trial and error unfortunately. Sorry for the long post. It's probably more info than you wanted. But that is the root of my question. I need a little more stabilization of my cyclign and can't up the only med that has had lasting positive effects fro me. So I'm looking for a dsafe reliable supplement/herb/vitamin that might do that for me.

Have you heard of Truehope's empowerplus? I tried it for two years once. I found that it helped me with me downs reasonable well but it couldn't control my manic times all that good. The high amounts of supplements caused me some bowel problems as well. So I have resorted to perscription medications for a much better result. However seeing that you are allergic to prescription medication these supplements might help you more than they did me.
