In many cases, I would say that they are disrespectful, in some not, but I am generally uninterested in these symbolic conflicts. Frankly I think this is a topic of interest mainly to professional Indians and others in liberal circles. I know of few people on the rez. who like such mascot names, but it isn't high on their list of things to change either. The importance of the issue lies in status politics, and frankly, I'm sick of being asked to support such games while my students can barely make it to class on a rainy day because the roads suck, and their degrees won't help them find employment because there are no jobs out here. I know, the theory is that such symbols contribute to the general oppression of Native Americans, but frankly, I think the link there is a bit too abstract. A lot of talent and energy are waisted on such nonsense, and it does little to improve the lives of the average native.
BTW: I think the "Fighting Whiteys" is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. It strikes me as about the right kind of protest, not too preachy, just making a point and moving on. I love it.
This post was edited, by Old Shepherd, for an inappropriate euphemism. Although the word was not spelled out it is still offensove to some people. This is a Christstian site and children can visit it.
