.... do you believe it is disrespectful to the native people?

Even if it is disrespectful, there is no Constitutional authority (that I am aware of) that would grant the government power to outlaw its use. Free Speech is the right of disrespectful people.

Are we against the "Fightin' Whiteys"?

Let me put it into perspective for you, do you want to see a baseball team called the Christs's?

How about Jesus malt liquor?

We came over here took there land away from them, stuck them on reservations, I think we at least owe them to quit demeaning them in this way.

I am not certain that these names were created in every case to be disrespectful. But if a significant group of Native Americans find certain names disrespectful, why not change them?

Oh, sure, we can try and say that the name now means something to us and should not be changed. But that argument seems to go out the window when Pepsi pays for the naming rights of the new stadium and we take their cash and rename the stadium. We could live with problem of forming a new identity in an effort to allow Native Americans to reclaim their own.

But isn't that exactly why we don't fly the confederate flag anymore over the Nation's Capital? It is disrespectal to alot of people.

Compassion wouldn't be a good enough reason? Thoughtfulness? Kindness? Peace? Christian virtue?

American=Christian?
Christian=American?
Does not compute.

As a Christian, I would gladly stop using terminology that a group of Native Americans found offensive on the grounds that it marginalizes them. As an American, I would gladly vote to stop using such terminology. Having rights does not mean that I should use them to oppress other people groups.

I think if the mascots are done with respect to the culture and depicted in a accurate manner, then they would be o.k. (ie: Chief Illini for the University of Illinois). But anything stereotypical and/or derogatory (Redskins, imagine teams called the Blackskins and Yellowskins and how well they would fly...) should be changed.

In many cases, I would say that they are disrespectful, in some not, but I am generally uninterested in these symbolic conflicts. Frankly I think this is a topic of interest mainly to professional Indians and others in liberal circles. I know of few people on the rez. who like such mascot names, but it isn't high on their list of things to change either. The importance of the issue lies in status politics, and frankly, I'm sick of being asked to support such games while my students can barely make it to class on a rainy day because the roads suck, and their degrees won't help them find employment because there are no jobs out here. I know, the theory is that such symbols contribute to the general oppression of Native Americans, but frankly, I think the link there is a bit too abstract. A lot of talent and energy are waisted on such nonsense, and it does little to improve the lives of the average native.

BTW: I think the "Fighting Whiteys" is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. It strikes me as about the right kind of protest, not too preachy, just making a point and moving on. I love it.

This post was edited, by Old Shepherd, for an inappropriate euphemism. Although the word was not spelled out it is still offensove to some people. This is a Christstian site and children can visit it.

I think Redskins is a rather derogatory term and I wouldn't care if it was changed (actually it wouldn't bother me if most were changed). I don't think the rest of the mascots are meant to be derogatory (and even the Redskins I doubt is meant to be that way).

Do the Irish have a problem with the Celtics or Notre Dame?

Do Scandanavians protest the Vikings (or whoever is from where the Vikings are from?)

I don't know a single cowboy, packer, steelworker, father, or Texan, that is upset by Dallas, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, San Diego, or Houston using them for their mascot. I would be honored if my alma mater changed from the Bison to the Heapshakes.

Brim,

For once, we agree. I too think that if Native Americans are truly intent on changing their lot, they will focus on the more important things such as lowering the murder rate on the rez, unemployment, education, and alchoholism, to name a few. In the grand scheme of things, a team being called the Indians doesn't have any effect whatsoever on a Native American student trying to educate themself and make a better tomorrow for them, their family, and others around them.

I feel like I have to start a new thread on something we can disagree on.

I think that is a major problem in society as a whole. Too many people pick insignificant little battles to appease their own agenda rather than focusing on the true problems. A lot of money and energy is wasted on fighting for inane causes.

I think it depends on how the Native Americans take it. I mean, if somone did call a team the fighting-whiteys and had some scrawny white guy standing with his fists up and curled back at him as a mascot, I'd probably laugh out loud. But then again I am not a member of a minority group that has been horribly mistreated time and time again.

If the Native Americans are offended, I would ask: why not change the mascot? Otherwise, it doesn't matter much to me.
