  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

NASB translation question

I really love the NASB but the only reason I have never moved to using it as my main Bible is the way it translates sexual immorality as just immorality in lots of scriptures. And in Matthew 5:32 it translates it as unchastity (although I could overlook this verse). I just can't seem to get passed this translation issue, if I could ever find an acceptable explanation I felt comfortable with I probably would make the switch. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Well, "unchastity" does mean "sexual immorality."

I guess the NASB translators thought that was the best modern word at the time (1960). The word "unchastity" was much more common than the phrase "sexual immorality" until about 1960.

The NASB does use "sexual immorality" in 1 Thessalonians 4:3, though.

For the word unchastity I figured it was something like that, a term used and understood at the time of translation. But what about all the scriptures that just use immorality instead of sexual immorality, for example:
Matthew 19:9
1 Corinthians 5:1
1 Corinthians 5:9-11
1 Corinthians 6:13
1 Corinthians 6:18
1 Corinthians 7:2
1 Corinthians 10:8
2 Corinthians 12:21
Galatians 5:19
Ephesians 5:3
Ephesians 5:5
Colossians 3:5
1 Timothy 1:10
Hebrews 12:16
Revelation 2:14
Revelation 2:20
Revelation 2:21
Revelation 14:8
Revelation 17:2
Revelation 17:4
Revelation 18:3
Revelation 18:9

Revelation 2:14
Revelation 2:20
Revelation 2:21
Revelation 14:8
Revelation 17:2
Revelation 17:4
Revelation 18:3
Revelation 18:9

In a few of those context makes the word "sexual" redundant (and I think they were shy of that word). In other cases a footnote explains that it means "fornication." Sometimes they appear to think immorality in a broader sense is intended. Sometimes I don't know what they were thinking.

In any case, I think you might find the NIV or ESV a better translation.

My thought is, "great, if that's your preference, don't switch to NASB." Unlike a KJV only person, you are aware that your personal preference for an English word doesn't dictate what the word of God should say, but rather, it reflects your own personal likes and dislikes. And that, in my mind, is perfectly acceptable. I like the word YHWH better than the word LORD. That doesn't make one better than the other. It just means I have a valid preference. NASB is just another in a long line of bibles that some will find helpful and some won't.

I only was reading for the most part the NIV, but got the nasb and just love it. There are few oddities ive noticed, like any other bible I guess, but definitly prefer it over the NIV. I got it from In touch ministries, and according to Dr. Charles Stanley, he says they believe this is the most accurate tranlation. I really respect him and he has been at it practically all his life. Please don't anybody tell me to read the KJV. At this point in my life I am too old to try to learn a foreing language.

That would also be the opinion of John MacArthur, and Chuck Swindoll.
