  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

3 most important or influential people in your life, past or present?

1.) My closest friend. I have talked about her in various threads.
2.) A therapist I saw many times through my former employer's Employee Assistance Program. I have talked about him in various threads. He is a faculty member at a Christian liberal arts college. The degree to which he helped me understand myself and the way that people respond to me is phenomenal. And he put everything in Biblical perspective.

3.) My former youth minister. He helped me put my life back together after I flunked out of college. With his guidance, for the first time I took responsibility for my life and set goals. I have realized several of those goals, such as getting back into good academic standing at my school. 14 years later I am still working on many of those goals, such as volunteering in the U.S. Peace Corps.

Name three things that you look for in a home to rent or purchase (I stress HOME. It does not necessarily mean "house". An apartment is a home too).

1. Jr. High spelling bee. It was down to me and this other girl, and I was so cocky  I spelled a word very quickly -- and very incorrectly! Boy did *I* learn a lesson that day!

2. Post-college. Major crush on a guy in my Bible study. We threw him a bday party and he called each of us later to express his thanks. I started gushing over the phone about how great I thought he was, and he totally freaked out. Uh, guess he wasn't interested. :o I was so embarrassed!

3. Church fellowship. The leader had printed out a psalm to read aloud. Only thing was, he must have scanned the text in and used character-recognition software, because instead of the word "God," what was printed on the page, over and over, was "Gog." Clearly he didn't realize this, and started reading aloud in a very solemn voice. The first time he got to "Gog" I started to giggle. By the second time, I was nearly in convulsions. I tried to fake a cough to cover my laughing fit, but I don't think anyone was fooled. I slinked out of the room as quickly as I could.

Same question: Three times you felt foolish?

1.) September 11, 2001. To understand what happened you have to understand the routine that I had then. I did not own a television set (still don't). I did not listen to the radio (still don't). I would get out of bed only with enough time left to take a shower and get dressed. I would then drive to work alone. Then when I got to the office I would glance at the front page of the newspapers on display in the elevators. Anyway, to make a long story short, not long after I got off of the elevator I started talking about football. Acting silly, I said to a co-worker whom I often talked with about sports something to the effect of "Can you believe that the Cincinnati Bengals and the San Diego Chargers both won? What is this world coming to?". He then, of course, was serious. "There are more important things than football going on in the world right now", he said. I did not know what he was talking about. He then informed me that the U.S. had been attacked by terrorists that morning. I had no idea. I did not have a clue that it was far from another ordinary day. I was talking about football!!

2.) The whole episode when a woman whom I worked with showed up unexpectedly at my apartment. Apparently she was "interested" in me. I was naive if I did not see the signs, people told me. Then she acted like nothing had ever happened. I still don't know what it was all about. It took me a while to get over feeling like a fool.

3.) The time that I called a woman at my workplace and asked if she would like to join me for lunch. She said that she appreciated the offer but that she was with somebody. I thought she meant that she was with a customer and that I was interrupting her. I called her later and apologized. Somebody then later informed me that by "with somebody right now" she meant that she had a boyfriend and was unavailable. It took me a while to get over feeling like a fool.
