  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I will give 1,000,000 blessings to the first person who correctly identifies each disgusting creature I describe.

First up--

This animal's name is used by criminals as an epithet to describe one crook who "squeals" on another. It greatly contributed to the "Black Death" plague which swept Europe and parts of Asia. The yearly damages from this loathsome creature to property and foodstores is in the billions of dollars.

Oddly enough, when domesticated it makes a delightful although slightly weird pet.

CaptainPrimerica wins! The blessings have been sent, and blessings to blessedmomof5 for being wonderfully specific!

Our next mystery vermin featured prominently in an MTV movie. 4,500 (approx) species exist.

Although we hate to see them in our houses, at least a few of these species are growing in popularity as a cheap easy-to-raise feeder insect for various and sundry reptiles, particularly lizards. Scientific data strongly implicates this critter as a causative agent in many cases of asthma. One in five people is allergic to them. They're more than happy to crawl out of the woodwork to feast on the crumbs of your last meal.

What goes racing for cover when the lights go on? Can you name that vermin?

ODAAT wins for correctly identifying cockroaches. Blessings sent!

Today's vermin species has greatly benefited from the ban on DDT. He hides in the seams of mattresses and comes out to feed on....you!

Good night, sleep tight, and don't let these little guys bite.

Blessedmomof5 wins by identifying "bedbugs." Blessings sent!

Our next vermin:

Correctly called the "rock dove," and more casually referred to as "the flying rat," this creature is well known for besmirching automobiles and statues with its copious droppings.

Blessings sent to Contango for correctly identifying the winged rat.

New vermin:

These little guys like to live in woods and grasses, on your pet, and on you. They can carry Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. They're not insects, they're arachnids. Their population numbers are highest where deer are prevalent.

Can you name this common vermin?

Blessedmomof5 wins again! Blessings sent.

This next species was purposefully introduced to the Galapagos islands by sailors who wanted a ready source of meat when they docked there to replenish supplies. Used in some parts of the world as a source of meat or milk, they give us a great example of how species which are useful in one area can be devastating when transplanted to another.

This species has contributed to the destruction of habitat for Galapagos giant turtles and other native species by grazing and destroying the plants which the turtles feed upon and through causing soil erosion by destroying grasses. Can you name this vermin?

You're quite welcome.

The vermin I'm thinking of is not a reptile and not vermin in other parts of the world. It's used as both a dairy animal and for it's meat. The males are notoriously smelly, but the females are a quite clean animal.

Where any animal becomes vermin is when it becomes harmful. In the Galapagos the native plant life was not suited to large concentrations of grazing animals. That is why the introduction of this particular animal was so devastating. They quickly multiplied and stripped much of the plant life that native species needed to survive.
