New Jersey state Sen. Edward Durr sensed something familiar when Republican Mayra Flores swept to victory last week in a South Texas congressional district that Democrats had taken for granted.

Seven months earlier, Mr. Durr, a furniture truck driver, made headlines by toppling state Democratic Senate President Stephen Sweeney — a key power broker in Trenton who’d held the post for 12 years — with a low-budget campaign that focused on COVID-19 restrictions and the impact on small businesses.


“The nucleus of it was the Democrats weren’t listening. We listened, we went out and reached out to the people and listened to them,” Mr. Durr, a first-time officeholder, told The Washington Times.

“They’re still not listening and that’s point evidence —[Ms. Flores] wins in a Democratic district. They weren’t listening and I don’t think they’ll be listening this November.”

She thinks "God is ignored" in government. Christians are *overrepresented* in Congress.

There is also implications that the that our government is ordained by God. It is not. It is ordained by the people.

Removing all the extra clauses and simplifying leaves from the preamble of the Constitution:

"We the People ... do establish and ordain ... this Constitution ..."

No. It only declares that the states are free. It organizes no government. (Several states had already declared themselves independent or acted as such prior to July 1776.) The Constitution takes its standing from the People, not the States, or any god.

Most of the Declaration is list of complaints about the king's government, headed by a preamble referencing a deistic god.

In absence of the Declaration of Independence; we would still be subjects of the King's government. I could write my own Constitution; but it would have no standing.

DoI or not, your homemade constitution would have no standing.

The DoI was just a resolution by a body had limited powers and needed to beg states for contributions. It took years to develop government from Congress and it (under the Articles of Confederation) was an abject failure. The Convention to revise said articles took it upon themselves (contrary to instruction) to craft a whole new government enabled by the people rather than the governments that had sent them. The US got its independence the old fashioned way -- by treaty after getting their old masters to concede in battle.
