Assume you are living in Britain in 1960.

You are an expectant mother, and your doctor prescribes (or recommends) Thalidomide to you.

Justify not taking it on scientific grounds.

Unless I actually had evidence or knew of detrimental side effects, I would hope the people who developed it and the doctor knows better than me and I'd take it. OR I could have simply decided to trust the FDA inspector Frances Oldham Kelsey who "refused Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for an application from the Richardson-Merrell company to market thalidomide, saying further studies were needed."

Now, how is this different from any other drug you've been prescribed, which you've admitted you would take or have taken, if and when needed?

Thanks for ruining my perfectly-good challenge thread!

I was saving that for my trump card; and honestly didn't expect one person to think of this.

You college kids aught to be banned from here! :p

It hasnt been tested as a teratogen on humans.

But your doctor just prescribed or recommended it, and it is being hailed [almost] worldwide as a wonder drug.

So what? I have a better grasp of potential biochemical interactions than my doctor. I just read some papers it hasnt been tested as a tetratogenic.

Suit yourself, then.

Your children will probably be born without Thalidomide defects then.

Just because you went against the grain and refused to listen to your doctor, your children (or child) will be born a healthy, vibrant baby.

That depends on which Dispensation we are currently in, and who's opinion of scripture I believe is the "Inerrant Word of Almighty God."

The mistake behind thalidomide is pretty stupid, the idea was that most chemicals couldnt pass through the placenta. This had no scientific merit and pretty much relied on gut instinct. I know you regard it as a failure of science but ultimatly it was a failure to use science, very little experimetation would have been needed to see the dangers of thalidomide to fetuses.

How do I know that the thalidomide dose was made in 1960? How do I know it wasn't made today with the appearance of having been made in 1960? And is this thalidomide made in the lab or did it appear ex nihlo... somewhere near my omphalos?

Thalidomide was indeed a sad situation. However the atrocities continue. Most just consider iatrogenic a necessary risk. Many thousands were recently killed by Vioxx.

Sandwiches nailed it in Post 3.

Sometimes it pays to stand up to science and say, "We're not going there; regardless of what you think!"

You are completely misrepresenting Sandwiches post 3. First, "science" is not something that one can have a conversation with - scientists are. Second, he pointed out that the scientists were not in agreement on this point. Third, you make it sound like science was bad. People were bad. Science is a good thing.
