I'm up with my son right now, waiting for poision control to call back for a checkup. About an hour ago, my 4 year old got into his daddies lunch box and got a pill bottle. He chewed up a half a Seroquel (12mg) if you don't know what that is, it's for people with major depression among other things that i can not spell. My husband takes a very low dosage to help with him sleep. His lunch box stay's in the car most of the time, but was brought in today, to refill his first aid kit. Daddy put his lunch box up in the kitchen, 4 getting to remove the pill bottle. His dumb mistake, he has already gotten yelled at for. While my husband was helping me take our new borns temp by the bumm, cause she already has a head cold, our son went into the kitchen and got into daddies lunch box. How he got that pill bottle open, we still haven't figured out. As soon as we saw him spit and run for a drink, we knew he got into something. We asked him flat out and he told us he ate the candy out of daddies lunch box. Which is something else my hubby got yelled at for, he brings home treats for our son every day and his daddies gives them to him out of his lunch box. I called 2 hospitals and they both told me to call poision control. They said to feed hom and make him drink alot of fluid and when they call back in an hour that he can go to sleep only if he sleeps on his belly, that way if he gets sick, he won't be on his back and choke. So I'm waiting on them to call back, 10 more minutes. I'm so ....... upset right now, at my hubby for 4 getting and at my son cause he knows better. Before Thanksgiving he was playing on the porch when I hanging something on our front door, another little four year old was also playing. My son coughed and told the other little boy he was sick. so the boy runs home. By then my son and I are crushing cans. I was right there when this little boy gives my son a Major mind drug ( I can't begin to spell the name) I was right there and didn't see this little boy hand him this pill. And of course My son chews it up. He spit it out and started screaming, cause it burned his mouth. I asked the other boy what he gave him thinking maybe a hot chip. He said I gave him a pill, cause he said he was sick. I rushed my kid to the hospital. His lips swelled and he got loopy. They filled him with that black chalk stuff and ran IV's and heart montiers on him, enough to scare him real bad. The doctor's said he could of died if i wasn't right there and noticed right away. So for my son to take anything without asking if it's good or not is unusal since that 2 days in the hospital, and my husband 4 getting to put the pill bottle up just baffles me. I feel like a worthless mom right now, like my two kids don't have a chance. Anyways the lady from the PC just called and said it's alright for us to go to bed and that we just have to watch him throughout the night. Since daddy 4 got he's sleeping with our son, I know I won't get much sleep either, I'll be up every 30 mins. checkin' on him. Good night, sorry for such a long post, I guess I just needed to vent!! :sigh:

I do hope your son is ok. I don't need to tell you that ALL medication should be stored well away from kids. Your husband needs to understand just how serious this event could have been, and not to leave medication lying around where your child can get hold of it. Yelling and screaming at him is only likely to turn your husband's guilt into anger. Is there a health professional who could explain the medication facts of life to your husband, maybe scaring him a little, so there is not a repeat performance?

Take care of yourself, you sound very wound up and my heart goes out to you.

Don't beat yourself or your husband up over this. It was an accident. I'm sure he knows that he should have put the box up, but mistakes can be made. When he brought it in he could have gotten distracted by something(the kids etc...)and he meant to put it back later but forgot. It happens. It doesn't make him a bad father. Nor does it make you a bad mother, because it happened, actually your a pretty good one for noticing that something was wrong.
As far as him bringing sweets home to your son, let him do that but ask him to do it once and awile. Him bringing them home to your son is something your son will always remember and feel special about. My husband's dad used to do that he would save him a twinkie in his lunch box and his dad would give it to him when he got home. He was from a family of 7 so that was something special between he and his dad. Plus I'm sure your husband loves the look on your little boy's face when he gives it to him.

We do keep allmedication locked up. Since that last visit to the hospital, our medicine cabinet is under lock and key. My son usually asks now if something is good for him now that we had that recent scare. That's why I don't understand why he chewed it up. Even if our next door neighbor gives him a treat, he comes and asks. My hubby and I had a talk before we fell asleep, I apoligized for yellin at him, he said he understood and he probably would of done the same thing. We almost lost our son once, it scary to think it could happen again.

He's okay now, he slept all night with both of us checkin on him. We 3 had a long talk today, and reminded him about his hospital visit. He doesn't want that. It was an accident, but some accidents shouldn't happen. But as long as he's okay, I'm okay.

I'm so happy your Sons alright! I was in a panic just reading that post. :(

I have a 3 year old and have already been through quite a few incidences. He once got into a sample perfume of mine, and hid it in his hand right before his bath. I got him undressed, told him to get in the bath.. then all of a sudden I heard him spitting something out. He drank half of the perfume! It wasn't that much, since it was just a little tube but I immediately went into panic, threw him in the car and right to the emergency room. It was awful:cry:He was fine, but I constantly remind him NEVER to put anything in his mouth without asking me first.

I'm glad everything's OK too. Hopefully he has learned his lesson to not play around with medicines.

As long as we're talking about it, my daughter when she was 3 had to go to the ER because she drank gasoline. My husband had poured some into a drinking glass, the only convenient receptacle neraby. REALLY BAD IDEA! Don't ever pour something poisonous into a drinking glass or cup.
