It's simple.

Only a scientist would argue the Bible is wrong about the moon shining.

Either that, or they're ... um ... in a state of irony when it comes to saying the moon doesn't shine, then turn on the TV and hear about a full moon shining and agreeing with it.

Even "earthshine" is a technical term and not a vernacular one.

A lit lightbulb shines, because it gives off light. Light from the lightbulb in the room lands on the wall, but you would hardly say the wall shines, would you? On the other hand, if an object is 'shiny' like a mirror or diamond, one might say that it shines when light falls on it.

I can only hope that AV intends this thread to lead to drinking moonshine.

1. Yes. Reflected light is still light. Many headlights today actually shine backward, into reflectors.
2. Yes, because shining can either mean to emit light or to reflect light.
3. Only to astronauts.

What's the difference between being "visible" and being "shiny"? A matter of degree, I suppose.

I agree with AV that it's a silly nitpick to point out that the moon doesn't generate its own light and that the Bible apparently claims otherwise, but if you adhere to a strict literalist KJV interpretation you are sort of saddled with that. By appealing to common vernacular and figures of speech you are giving up literalism.

Well you can, but it's a bit difficult to be a KJVO absolute literalist and do so. There is less room for interpretation.
