Tips, as in how to write?

The beautiful thing about writing is that it's actually quite easy to do. Simply place your pencil or pen upon paper and write (or, click away at that keyboard). Writing well is a completely different story.

I am not experienced enough to be able to give you a defined list of steps, though I seriously doubt such a list could exist. The best advice I can give is to continually write, and show your poetry/prose to other writer's. The community will shape your writing.

Another great thing is to read. If you're interested in writing poetry, make sure you read poetry. If you're interested in writing literature, then read literature.

Finally, don't try to be overly descriptive of everything. This might sound random, but it is a major stumbling block for beginning writers. I myself used to do it. Some description is important in fiction, or else your audience wouldn't know what is going on. But, don't spend two pages describing a tree. Readers will quickly be turned off. Also, don't try to write in an elevated tone. If you write poetry, you don't need to write like Shakespeare to sound good. If you write prose, try to develop your own style.

Good luck, and welcome to the wondrous journey of the writer!
