I have a question about my Mother's apparent lack of faith. In a conversation with her last night, the woman who raised me as a Christian noted her lack of faith. I was dumbfounded to know that my mother lacked faith after raising me. She attributes it to things being too har din her life. She's a nurse by profession, so I had thought that maybe as a scientist she needed proof (which defeats the purpose of faith).
My mother was born with a birth defect called cleft pallet and her sister was born with a much more serious birth defect that led to her death in her early 20's. Also, my mothers parents had a very hard life together- eventually doing well for themselves financially, but each dying a miserable death. My mother cites her and her sister's birth defects as her lack of faith, along with her parents lives.
She asked me how a God could allow all of that to happen- how he could allow children to be born with diseases, etc. I had no answer for her and this disturbed me-it didn't shake my faith, but it did make me wish I could help her.
She mentioned that "deep down" she believed but I don't feel that's enough. She also mentioned that she thought everyone was offered a final chance of accepting Christ as their savior before they die. But then seemed confused as she related a story about my grandfather: he was a Marine in the 2nd world war and among other historical battle was on Normandy. Apparently as he watched young men die around him he heard them call out for their mothers, not for God. So this story affects my mother as well.
I apologize for this long and somewhat scrambled post, but this has really been on my mind and I'd like to have some feedback from other Christians.
