  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a question about my Mother's apparent lack of faith. In a conversation with her last night, the woman who raised me as a Christian noted her lack of faith. I was dumbfounded to know that my mother lacked faith after raising me. She attributes it to things being too har din her life. She's a nurse by profession, so I had thought that maybe as a scientist she needed proof (which defeats the purpose of faith).
My mother was born with a birth defect called cleft pallet and her sister was born with a much more serious birth defect that led to her death in her early 20's. Also, my mothers parents had a very hard life together- eventually doing well for themselves financially, but each dying a miserable death. My mother cites her and her sister's birth defects as her lack of faith, along with her parents lives.
She asked me how a God could allow all of that to happen- how he could allow children to be born with diseases, etc. I had no answer for her and this disturbed me-it didn't shake my faith, but it did make me wish I could help her.
She mentioned that "deep down" she believed but I don't feel that's enough. She also mentioned that she thought everyone was offered a final chance of accepting Christ as their savior before they die. But then seemed confused as she related a story about my grandfather: he was a Marine in the 2nd world war and among other historical battle was on Normandy. Apparently as he watched young men die around him he heard them call out for their mothers, not for God. So this story affects my mother as well.

I apologize for this long and somewhat scrambled post, but this has really been on my mind and I'd like to have some feedback from other Christians.

I would encourage her to read her Bible and go to church.

Romans 10:17:
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 8:28:
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

God didn't promise life would be easy. But He did promise a perfect rest and eternal life for those who believe (trust in the Lord).

If she went ahead and raised you Christian, she probably doesn't realize that doing that already took some faith - lots of faith in my opinion.

I question my faith often and then realize all the things I'm doing or have done that required faith. In those cases, I haven't lost it, I just ignored it because the faith made it so easy.

Hi. Your mother has not lost her faith, otherwise, God would be a liar, and we know that is not true. You might show her this scripture: Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man THE MEASURE OF FAITH, (that's us women also). She has "some" faith.
What your mom is experiancing is what most every Christian goes through at some point in their life, and attack on their faith from the enemy of our souls, Satan. If your mom has gotten out of reading the bible, praying etc., then she needs to jump right back into it. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing BY THE WORD OF GOD. Her Spirit is being starved. Satan would like nothing better then to get us out of Gods Word, so he can move in for the attack. If we have the Word in us, then we can send old "horned head" running when the attacks come, but you have to have a Spirit that is full of the Word to do this. :prayer: .

We all walk through those dark times when God seems distant and our faith is tested. Sometiomes we voice our thoughts, and they can be misunderstood. God leads us through those times so we grow stronger in Him. Don't let a time of testing on someone else's part make you wrongly judge them.

Hi there!

It would be better if your mother asked God how he could allow all of that to happen. Sincere seekers get sincere answers. And if the answer doesn't come from God, there will be a day when there is "peace" concerning the situation.

We can ask each other why God does this or that, and we build our relationship and put our faith with other people. Build your relationship with God instead.

Man never has had the answers.

God only judges according to what faith He has given, and since no man or woman can see the heart of another person, believe the best for your mother and don't doubt. She may be just fine with the Lord, and that is what I would believe, for love believes all things - giving the benefit of doubt to love and the ability of love to cover a multitude of sins.

1 Peter 4:8 above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covereth a multitude of sins:

Luke 12:48 For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Your mother had a birth defect and later became a nurse? Hmmmm......I don't think God caused her birth defect but what satan means for harm, God can turn to good. Maybe we are allowed to go thru things so that we have things to learn and to become stronger. Your mom learned a compassion for those with infirmities and as an adult ministers to the sick and hurt....perhaps this is where He is using her.....and she also raised a son in the Lord and who knows what great things God will accomplish thru you?
