  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

MY kind of sheriff!

Living on the streets does? I realize your point, but at least the inmates did something wrong to end up there. That cannot be said for all homeless.

The homeless and the criminal, in most cases, not all probably suffer from the same problem: mental health and substance abuse.

I heard about some things that go on in jail--honestly I live in a po dunk rural area and saw the jail and thought, "how quaint...nothing THAT bad can happen there..." Well...after speaking to a lady who spent some days there, it IS that bad.

The lady I spoke to, who was there, was a grandmother type..not your "typical" criminal either

I don't know, you guys. These people in prison are there for a reason. They are not model citizens that's for sure. Why should they have it better than our troops in Iraq?

MNC, you raise some very good points that are certainly worth considering. All I can tell you is how I relate to people in the prison ministry I'm a part of.

People are in prison for various reasons but knowing why they are in prison is meaningless. The fact is I meet with folks that are there. Why means nothing.

As for having it better than our troops in Iraq or any other theater of war I think that the level of danger is just about equal.

How much compassion are we supposed to have?

What does Jesus say? What does he teach us? What did Paul do when the prison doors opened and the jailer was ready to kill himself?

What about punishment?

I'm not suggesting that no one ever 'pay' for their crimes. what I'm suggesting is that we be compassionate none the less.

Should people that commit heinous crimes not have to pay in some way?

Of course they should.

Should we not have more compassion on the victim? How about the victim's family? Why all this compassion for people in prison?

Yes, yes and because Jesus directed us to.

I mean, they are there for a reason. I say if they do the crime, they should do the time.

No doubt.

If someone murders or rapes a child or takes a gun to school and wipes out 10 students -- I don't care if they are uncomfortable in prison or if they are depressed. They should have thought of that before they committed the crime.

But that's just it sometimes their thinking (or lack thereof) is influenced by Satan and the negative picture of God that he likes to paint of god and God's character.

But isn't equally true that a number of homeless are also responsible for their condition and the predictament they find themselves in? Yet the "why's" make little difference as to the situation one finds themselves in. Compassion doesn't ask why and doesn't need to know why.

Also, I don't recall Jesus blaming anyone or anything other than Satan for the troubles in this world.

Mat 13:28
He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

Mat 13:39
The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

Andrew--I wasn't directing any comments towards you friend, so please don't think that I have.

Also-if someone has committed a true crime (BTW--most laws on the books today were not there 50 years ago) then yes--they should be punished for it.

But we must not forget that..
#1. far too many innocent people are being convicted with little to no evidence against them,
#2. prisons today are PROFIT driven (CCA is an example)
#3. loosing ones freedom is punishment enough, but the state has no right to put the inmate in harms way or to deny them nutrition, or medical or dental services
#4. the moral status of a country is determined on how it treats it's prisoners

Arpaio, is a sadist. He belongs in a mental institution. Night--I bet you wouldn't feel the same about this monster if it was YOU in this asylum.

Nice try. If I did anything to warrant going to prison I wouldn't have much to say about it, now would I? And neither should I.

Go ahead and cry for the poor widdle mistreated criminals all you want Honor. Just don't expect me to join you.

SHERIFF JOE FOR PRESIDENT!
