  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just got this e-mail today:

SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas.

He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.

Update on Joe Arpaio

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO

HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio
who created the 'Tent City Jail':

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but 'G' movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then He Started
Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get Sued For Discrimination.

He took away cable TV Until
he found out there was A Federal Court Order That Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again. Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.

When asked why the weather channel
He replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working ON My Chain Gangs.

He Cut Off Coffee
Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton..If You Don't Like It,
Don't Come Back.'

He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the
jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More On The Arizona Sheriff:

With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix
(116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), The Associated Press Reports: About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued Pink Boxer Shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached
138 Degrees Inside The Week Before.

Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.

'It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,' Said James Zanzot, An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year.
'It's Inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio,
the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear, But They Didn't Commit Any Crimes, So Shut Your Damned Mouths!'

Way To Go, Sheriff!

Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

If you agree, pass this on. If not, just delete it.

Nice! GO JOE!

So SDA's aren't allowed to have an opinion regarding the prison system?

Why is the thread on the death penalty there?

It is a perfectly legitimate social issue and last I heard, Adventists had to live in society.

Come on Conklin.

I like that.

I get sick of hearing how our inmates live better than our homeless. It's pathetic.

Andrew should we treat the prisoners as less than human?

Mat 25:35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed [thee]? or thirsty, and gave [thee] drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took [thee] in? or naked, and clothed [thee]? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me.

If God is willing to give those behind bars a second, third, fourth, fifth, etc. chance shouldn't we?

The point of my post is the disgusting contrast between two groups of people. So do you think we should continue budgeting millions of tax dollars to fund comfortable lifestyles for inmates or possibly funnel some of that money into a program that helps homeless?

If we're talking about 2nd chances, shouldn't we as humans at least give it to those who partially deserve it?

No doubt.

I take it you've never been in jail or prison before Andrew. I can assure from first hand experience that it is not a "comfortable lifestyle." Prison is extremely difficult and depressing and far from a "comfortable" life.

If we're talking about 2nd chances, shouldn't we as humans at least give it to those who partially deserve it?

Andrew, we should have compassion and show compassion for all people. If God is no respecter of persons why should we be respecters of persons?

I don't know, you guys. These people in prison are there for a reason. They are not model citizens that's for sure. Why should they have it better than our troops in Iraq?

How much compassion are we supposed to have? What about punishment? Should people that commit heinous crimes not have to pay in some way?

Should we not have more compassion on the victim? How about the victim's family? Why all this compassion for people in prison? I mean, they are there for a reason. I say if they do the crime, they should do the time.

If someone murders or rapes a child or takes a gun to school and wipes out 10 students -- I don't care if they are uncomfortable in prison or if they are depressed. They should have thought of that before they committed the crime.

HOw does a person become a criminal? Perhaps in some situations social conditions create the criminal...

Arpaio, is a sadist. He belongs in a mental institution. Night--I bet you wouldn't feel the same about this monster if it was YOU in this asylum.

Honor you and I are on the same page today!!! If a person is treated like garbage they will act like garbage. No I am not saying to feed prisoners gourmet meals but come one....most of these people have substance abuse problems---how about PREVENTION???Giving people access to mental health services before they commit a crime????This society REACTS to problems it's not effective.

Okay, before anyone jumps to any conclusions, I have a close relative in prison. I know very well what prisons are like. But I also know there are certain privileges they recieve that are entirely unnecessary. One of them being TV. I know not all inmates get it, but my point is TV is unnecessary outside of prison, let alone behind bars! As for this relative, it is hard, but at the same time I know they deserve to be there. Frankly, if you would ask what they deserve, well, he deserves to stay there the rest of his life. I don't want him to, but he deserves to.

I understand there are people in prison who honestly shouldn't be there, and I'm also all for treating people humanely, but I don't like it when extra and unnecessary tax dollars are spent on prisons. When 5-15 years in prison starts becoming a 5-15 year getaway to the Hilton, we have a problem. I realize that is a gross exaggeration but I'm sure you get the point.

Perhaps this money could go to state funded asylums? There's a novel idea. RND, I know you do prison ministries etc, but how much do you know about mentally retarded people ending up in prison? Were you aware of how many asylums have been shut down and how many of their patients end up in special prison programs.

Anyway, my point is there are people desperately needing help in our nation and I do not think that prison inmates come first on that list.
