  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is the Biblical Jesus Christ a man-made invention?

I can still believe and accept science.
But only to a point.

Sooner or later science is going to shoot one of your deities in the foot, and you're going to have to make a decision as to whether who is right: science or your god.

But you can't.
Yes, I can.

Here are my standards:

1. Bible says X, science says X = go with X
2. Bible says X, science says Y = go with X
3. Bible says Ø, science says Y = go with Y
4. Bible says Ø, science says Ø = speculate

That means I can accept science to a point.

But when it argues against the Bible, then it can take a hike.

It also shows quite clearly why I argue against science and still go to my doctor and type on a computer.

I've often wondered how serious this command it taken, especially with the number of civilian people killed by military actions with little protest or even acknowledgment by the religious community.

Hey hey friend.

Please be patient there will be plenty of time. By the way a more accurate term is thou shalt not murder.

Cheers

Then I will pick science.

That means I can accept science to a point.

But when it argues against the Bible, then it can take a hike.

Like I said earlier; you're fine with it up until it's inconvenient to something you'd rather believe.

Then I will pick science.
Then don't be surprised if science already hasn't pwned your deities as having no evidence for their existence.

And I'd still like to know what your deities think of you.

I [think I] know what you think of them: they exist until science says otherwise.

What does God think of me?

I'm "accepted in the Beloved."

Ephesians 1:6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved.

The burden of proof lies with the one making the positive assertion. In this case, it's that god(s) exist. I can't provide that proof. My evidence is sufficiently convincing for me, and should not be for anyone else. That's why I don't have a problem with science (or anyone else) saying they don't exist. But again, my religion doesn't really make claims about how that natural world works. The mythology associated with my deities are not taken literally.

And I'd still like to know what your deities think of you.

They think I'm pretty OK.

I [think I] know what you think of them: they exist until science says otherwise.

Again, as the one making the positive assertion, it's on my shoulders to show they do exist, as long as I want someone else to accept their existence. There is no scientific test to verify god(s) because there is no empirical evidence. If I make a claim about an historic event or about how the natural works, then again, it's up to me to prove it, but science can refute any evidence that I present.

It's like someone saying they believe unicorns live in Jupiter's atmosphere and we all need to be nice to them or they will invade the Earth. Science doesn't need to prove that there aren't unicorns, the person needs to prove that there are. Science can then test the evidence provided, but until then, science has no reason to think there are unicorns.

What does God think of me?

I'm "accepted in the Beloved."

So he fulfills an emotional requirement.

(I'm doing some traveling this weekend, so I wont' be back until Sunday night)

Science can take a hike, can't it?
NO! Science gives us an important window into things. For this Lover of God, that window includes how God Create new life forms. Science also gave me the computer I'm typing on and the car I drive, the medication this old body needs to stay alive, I could go on and on and on...

Sounds like you pick and choose then -- just like we all do.
