I think it all ended with the Clinton Presidency. Really I do. At that point I think the nation woke up realizing the generation which gave us the counterculture, “free love” and rampant drug use was not going to be a paragon of personal virtue.
Christians rapidly realized they were not voting to elect their senior pastor but a chief executive. For Christians we are to be at peace with others as much as possible. So people saw a GWB who was previously an admitted alcoholic and drunk driver for who he was while running. I guess Christians also looked the other way when realizing John McCain dumped his then wife and children for a woman 18 years younger. That wasn’t even a major headline in 2008. I think people who voted for him looked at who he was then and not 25 years or so earlier.
