Yeah I do think it can turn into a popularity contest. Which could open a can of worms especially if the person who wins was nominated for creating something that shouldn't have even been voted for in the first place.
Science sometimes (most of the time? all the time?) runs on votes.

That's how Pluto got demoted, and what gave the Challenger the green light to go ahead and launch.

Had they not voted, we would still have a 9th planet and 7 astronauts.

Yeah, I remember when they had the vote to decide what the speed of light should be. That was a crazy day, all those scientists with long white beards in suits going out and getting drunk to celebrate afterwards...

I am eternally 31 years old. I achieve this by travelling at the speed of light at all times.
Okay -- that was a good one!

Better for you to travel faster than the speed of light so you can violate causality.
In this case you can put AV on ignore before he even has a chance of upsetting you with his posts.

.. a feat of research that may well result in both a future and a past Ig Nobel (Physics) prize?

Plus we would have gained a 10th, an 11th, and maybe more. We really missed out with that vote!
Then we'd have to learn:

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Ceres
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Orcus
Pluto
Salacia
Haumea
Quaoar
Makemake
Gonggong
Eris
Sedna
Yup -- just like the Periodic Table of the Elements.
Of course, there's a very specific definition of what an element is. Pluto wasn't kicked off the list of planets until they developed such a definition for what a planet is.
