I really look up to R.C Sproul. I agree with him on everything so far. I haven't read and studied all of his work. But he is the standard I look to to see what the reformed position is.

Dr Sproul is one of the best, I thank God for him.

So far I've not disagreed with Dr. Sproul on one point of his that I've heard.

I was for women in the ministry but after this wake up call I'm not really there anymore. I think it leads to questioning the authority of scripture.

I now think we should make it a practice that if something in scripture could be taken either way we should go with the safer bet and take it literally. So, I'll go with that unless I hear a certainly convicting argument against it. So, I'll just trust that Paul's writings on this were literal. I think that's the safer bet now.

I learned about this from the Baptist site.

This is the damning article.

I have to talk to my wife tonight and send an email to the pastors that I won't be returning. I'm a bit nervous. I don't know of any other Churches around here that are Reformed. I just found this one a couple months back. This is disturbing. I'm changing my icon to Calvinist until I figure this out.

I follow the Lord, not any denomination.

This is unfortunate. We liked that Church. I'm afraid to move. We were just getting settled. I hope that the Spirit guides us. I feel like I'm in a life raft out on an unknown ocean praying for land.

Dear Good Sir,

I hope you won't be offended by a non-Calvinist (who is a graduate of Calvin College, if that don't beat all) butting in on your forum, but I would say that you should have plenty of non-PC(USA) Presbyterian choices available in your area.

Right off hand, I'm sure there are a number of ARPC (Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church) congregations in the area; heck, one of their oldest presbyteries is the Catawba Presbytery. My in-laws live on Lake Norman and two Christmases ago my wife and I attended Christmas eve service at Lakeside ARP just off I-77 in Mooresville. Very nice service. Read not too long ago on their website that their minister is working on his Ph.D. from Vandy, so you can be sure they observe the traditional Reformed emphasis on a well-educated pastorate and (presumably) a theologically-literate laity. And as they state on their website, they're one of the oldest denominations in the United States (dating back to the 1780's, if I recall correctly), and they've gone through all the theological battles and remained true to the faith.

I believe the denomination's website is arpsynod.org. Otherwise just Google it. Googling is the cool thing to do. Everybody's doing it. Try it. You'll like it.

Yours,
Jeff

EDIT: Hmmm ... just re-read the whole thread and realized you're in Texas, the story is from N.C. But I think I'll keep up this post just as a plug for the ARPC. If nobody objects, that is. And if anyone does, please kindly throw softer rather than harder objects at Jeff's head.

DD,
I'm a late responder in this thread but you might also like to visit one of the four OPC congregations in the DFW area. Here's one of them: http://www.faithopcdallas.org/

I pray you and your family will find a faithful church and will be able to settle in and be at peace with all this soon.

What makes the OPC different from the PCA?

So, We visited a PCA church. We are planning to visit again. But the problem is that they are without a pastor so there is a lot of uncertainty in the air there. We're going to give it another shot though.

Anyway, I was doing a search this morning for Calvinist Churches in the US and found the following from a Lutheran Site. Here is the link: http://www.orlutheran.com/html/calvinistchurches.html

Notice in the info provided below how much larger the PC-USA is than any other Calvinist denomination. How could this have happened to them? As one just stepping foot back into protestantism in general that is a disconcerting sign. I would think that any Church bearing the name Presbyterian would be an Orthodox Calvinist in it's doctrine. So it's a bit confusing really.

Calvinist Churches in the USA

Reformed Churches

Christian Reformed Church in North America - 198,000
Hungarian Reformed Church in America - 6,000
Netherlands Reformed Congregations in North America - 9,047

Presbyterian Churches

Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church - 40,600
Cumberland Presbyterian Church - 86,049
Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America - 15,142
Evangelical Presbyterian Church - 63,447
Korea-American Presbyterian Church
Orthodox Presbyterian Church - 25,302
Presbyterian Church in America - 299,055
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) - 3,561,184
Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America - 6,105

Pastor Gary Shepherd is in Jacksonville which is only 15 or 20 miles from New Bern. here is a link where you can listen to his messages:
http://www.sermonaudio.com/search.a...rrSection=sermonsspeaker&Keyword=Gary^Shepard

PM me and I will give you his e-mail address.

Thanks for the link! I'll check the church out but it isn't what I had in mind. I was thinking of a church affiliated with Sovereign Grace Ministries - see here: http://www.sovereigngraceministries.org/

David, that's why it is wise to study these denoms and find one that remains faithful. The PCUSA has been under attack for a couple of hundred years, so it is no surprise that it is Presbyterian in name only. The tares have overwhelmed that denom, but there are still those who have withstood the assault of the world. The list I sent you had many faithful congregations in the Dallas area, and I'm sure there are more. If Town North is not what you are hoping for, try some of the others, but it will benefit you and your family to find a body of believers to be a part of, even if it takes some effort to find. May the Lord bless your search.

Thanks. We liked it. People were friendly and the things we heard were good. We're going to try it again. It's just the first time either of us have ever been to a church that doesn't have a pastor.

I can't really speak for the PCA so I won't try to offer any comparisons. For the most part, as far as I can tell, the PCA remains a faithful and sound denomination.

For more info on the OPC, I recommend you start here: http://opc.org/about.html
