• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

We are checking my daughter for Autism after the holidays. We think it might be aspergers and they want to test me as well seeing as how they think it could be genetic. I am hoping that it is the answer because it would help in dealing with her at home, school, and church. I know that I had problems as a child and still have problems now but I always thought it was my mental illness among other things. Just need prayers that it is that and if it is not at least we can rule it out.

I have autism too -- but if your daughter has autism, you should know what my doctor said about it: "It's like having super powers."

Just trying to cheer you up. Autism gives us abilities that other people do not have, it makes us special inside. People with autism are sometimes smarter than those who do not have it, my doctor also said.

Even though autism is a mental disability, you should view your daughter as the special person she is regardless if she has it or not.

...You're still human. That might seem kind of redundant now, but sometimes in my life I would get that sort of feeling from not being able to fit in.

Having a form of autism (for me it's Asperger's) has its challenges, but nothing is impossible with God. Just remember that even if you and your daughter turn out to have specially wired brains, any experience you may have is something that not only other autistic people might experience, but all sorts of other people might feel as well.

You're not alone no matter what you feel :)
