  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Macs still crash :p

What OS were you running? I run win2k, I haven't had many problems at all. I think XP is good too, though not as stable as win2k (much easier to use I guess, though ;))

But every computer I've had has had it's difficulties. Well, except our old 11mhz pre-286 computer. 4mb ram, 20mb hard drive, no sound card, 256 colors... it worked great! ;)

XP is better than 2000- but it is slow and the driver support is light - things that you could do with external devices in 2000 might not work with XP - my new printer wont do a lot of stuff do to the twain driver.

Stability is relative. Why does your computer crash, what are you doing - look at what is running first then go from there.

Yeah, if you're using an Windows-based OS, you're going to be pretty much stuck with at least occational crashes. And it's pretty much a given that if you're constantly installing and removing programs (like most users), that you'll eventually need to reinstall the thing from scratch.

My brother's Windows install just died a horrible, flaming death the other day when he tried to use Add/Remove to uninstall his old video drivers (he'd recently upgraded his video card). After rebooting, Windows tried to reinstall drivers for all his hardware. The end result was Windows thinking he didn't even have a keyboard and mouse, let alone anything else whenever he booted up.

Like Lacmeh said, if you crave stability, go Linux. The learning curve and fewer software options tend to keep most people away, though.

Actually Linux crashes a lot too. I run mainly XP. I run 98 and varies versions of Linux as well. With Windows based programs 3 things are the most common reasons for lockups and errors. 3 things many techs. dont' even realize (and end up blaming bad hardware for it). That's buggy drivers. Update your video, sound and even nic drivers. Nic drivers specially if your using it for high speed internet. Video drivers are always a must to keep updated as well. Spyware is also a very very big one. Usually over looked by even most techs. Most don't even know what it really is. It's stuff like Gator and there are some that come with Kazaa and Bearshare etc. They use your CPU power for other companies. Some popup advertisments. Some just send your web surfing information to companies for marketing info. The software is buggy and can be next to impossible to uninstall so it ends up crashing your machine or making it run slow and you can't do anything about it! Thankfully there is a great program that gets rid of spyway! Get it at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ it's free and easy to use. Bet you'll be surprise how much spyware you find on your own machine! 3rd is virii. Specially if your downloading programs and mp3's. Even though mp3's themselves don't have viruses there are programs that are made to look like they are mp3's. Virii can come in e-mails from friends and family that don't know they are infected. Best is to run a new copy of antivirus like Norton and don't forget to update it weekly! If you don't update it it is usless. Hope this helps some people out there.

Thought about it and thought I would list even more common causes for lockups.

1. Low memory resources.

If in 98 or 95 or ME right click on my computer and go to properties. Go to the performance tab. Are you resources below 80% with nothing open? Your in trouble. Time to disable things. With all Windows versions except 95, NT 4 and 2000 you have a nice program called msconfig. Go to start and then click run. Type msconfig. Click the startup tab on top. Take out unneeded things. All that stuff loads up everytime you load up your comptuer and takes memory! When your memory (also figured into that resources number) gets to low you will get errors and lockups. Best way is to clean this startup group. If you need something back, easy enough just recheck it! Also adding more memory to a machine can help out in the memory area. If you run 2000 or XP you can check your memory resources by hitting control, alt and delete and going to performance under there and seeing if there is a lot of memory being used. If you don't have msconfig since you run a version of windows that doesn't have it you can drag things out of your startup folder under start/program files/startup. Also there are more in the registry. If you go into the registry though make sure you know what your doing otherwise you machine won't be booting up if you make a mistake. To clean stuff out of there go to start and run. Type in regedit and open it. Click the plus next to hkey_local_machine then software then microsoft then windows then currentversion then click on the run folder to open it. In the right window now is the list of programs that run everytime you boot up. You can delete those things but I suggest backing up first by going to to the top menu and go to file and export. Save it to a file, then delete things ONLY in the run folder and then reboot.

2. Computer needs a tune up.

I won't go into details but a good tune up for a computer is to run a few good programs in most versions of Windows. Go to start then program files then accessories then system tools. In there run diskcleanup (if you have it) if you don't have it normally it's safe to just go to your C: drive and go into your windows folder and then delete things ONLY in a folder called temp. Leave the folder itself along. Just delete files IN the folder (I can't stress that enough). After you clean up your drive then go to the same program files, accesories, system tools and run scandisk. After that same place, go to defrag. Defrag may take a long time so do it when you don't need your machine since you don't wanna have any other programs open when doing it or it will keep restarting the defrag process.

3. Loose hardware.

Do this only if you feel safe doing this. Best if you are wearing a grounding strap on your wrist so static electricity doesn't zap anything. Make sure you have your system unplugged when doing this also. Open up your computer case and take out the cards that are in the large white, black and brown slots and put them back in. A can of compressed air comes in handy to clean out the dust that has gotten sucked in by your power supply fan. Put your cards back in tight. Their "gold teeth" shouldn't be sticking out of those slot. Also if you know where your memory is reseat that as well.

Well that's it for now. I may come up with things later, maybe I should just start a new thread if I do.

With linux if you want to learn and start using it there are 2 versions I suggest you start out with.

http://www.linux-mandrake.com It's like Red Hat linux but has more programs with it and is easier to install normally.

http://www.redhat.com/ Only recommend Red Hat over Mandrake if you are more advanced with linux or are looking to start something like a web server up.

You can download these versions free from their sites. Recommend a fast connection since normally you have to download atleast 3 CD's worth of information. Otherwise you can normally order it online for a low price and the ones you pay for sometimes come with some extras.

"mandrake linux easyer?!? Nope it isn't"

How so? We have a local linux group of about 30 people that meet once a month (even though I don't attend much any more) and most tend to think it is comparing to about all other linux distribs. I know it can be harder though in rare cases. Just wondering what your experience was.

Mandrake, I have heard, has an easier interface to use... better GUI.

RedHat Linux, with which I have a little tiny bit of experience, wasn't all that incredibly easy for me to figure out, even though I'm a computer addict ;)

Well linux can be tricky in that installing new programs after linux is installed can be tricky, specially at first and sometimes you have to customize your drivers to get your video or sound to work right. I love linux but I stick with XP mainly for now since it runs the programs I need to run and it has drivers for all the hardware I use.

With todays machines and applications you need lotsa ram.

Assuming you're running windows, keep the registry clean. If you do a lot of program installs/uninstalls it gets really gummed up. What I end up doing is dedicating myself to an annual refresh where I backup my documents, favorite folders, and stuff like that then reformat the ole hardrive and reload my apps. Very time consuming, but I have been crash free for a long time (hope I didn't just jinx myself!).

Also I can not stress this enough, if you do a lot of surfing you have to run programs like "adaware". As Project 86 mentioned earlier.

"How'd you manage that?"

Well sometimes when I experienced it I think it was just bad video drivers. I know that's more of a gui problem then kernel but anytime the only way out is to hit the power button I call that a lockup not matter what OS. ;)

Actually Linux crashes a lot too.

Yeah it can crash but it doesn't crash a lot. I have been using linux and freebsd for a about 7 year. I am using freebsd has my internet gateway. I have had my freebsd box uptime for almost 200 days without a crash then my power went out. :(

But my linux computer is really stable I use Slackware linux and it is super stable.
