• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

My cat, who was only 7 years old, died yesterday. She was failry overweight(18 pounds),and she had trouble breathing this past week.

I was in my living room when I started to notice that my cat was breathing even harder than before. However, I thought that it was the heat so I turned on A/C. After about 5 minutes, she made growling noises as if she was in pain. I yelled at my mom and asked her to take my cat to the pet hospital. I grabbed my cat cage transporter to put my cat in it, grabbed m cat, and tried to stick her into the cage. However, with all of her might, she was resisting to go into the cage. After two attempts(roughly 45 seconds), I stopped trying to push her into the cage, and I again called my mom.I then let my cat lie next to the cage as I was going to get a towel and gently pick her up. My cat stared yelling and squishing her paws as if she was in pain, and she later stopped moving.

Was I responsible for her death? I don;t mean the fact that she was overweight, but by pushing her into the cage because I wanted to transport her to the hospital. We tried everything to make her lose weight, from buying diet food to rationing her food, but all to no or little avail. I think I accelerated her heart too much when I was pushing her into the cage(do note that she was having trouble before I did this).

The vet said that she was dead when we brought her to him and that she probably died from heart failure. My mother insists that I had nothing to do with her death because she was already having trouble breathing and that she was too overweight to live a longer life.

I was literally weeping in tears the whole day my cat died( to the astonishment of my mom, since I am, without being too conceited, a fairly "athletic" guy).

Sorry for wtiing an essay, but do you think I was responsible for my cat's death(be honest)? Also, why do you think my cat died?

I am sorry to hear about your cat. I know just how easy to get attached to them. They simply become part of the family. It is okay to grieve is the first thing I want to say. And secondly don't blame yourself, it sounds like your cat had heart trouble. You didn't cause her death by trying to push her into the cage. Cats often resist being caged. Your cat may have even sensed she was in trouble. Often they know when they are dying and go off to be by themselves. So don't blame yourself for trying to help her/him.

You are NOT responsible for your cats death hon - your poor kitty was already dying when you were trying to help. I am so sorry for your loss! I know how much our pets mean to us - they give unconditional love that no one can replace. I hope you have pictures of your kitty - keep them near and try to have good memories, ok?:groupray:

It sounds like your cat was already dying. It wasn't your fault. Please don't beat yourself up about it. I have felt the same way when two of my precious birds died. We have a lot of pets, and therefore a lot eventually end up dying. It was one of the hardest things that happened to me. Especially because I thought I probably could have prevented it. But I don't worry about it any more. My little birdies are in Jesus' hand, and when I get to heaven, I will have two precious birds flying to me. :) And you will have a kitty waiting for you!

I know what you are going through, it is so devestating to put down a beloved memboer of our family, especially so young!!!!

I did not have the hundreds of $s to diagnos his ailments let alone the thousands of $s to make him well. and this by itself is sssooo unfair!!!!! as humans we go to hospital and they fix us and bill us later, but vets always need money upfront. NOT FAIR!!! if only I could have made payment arrangements could we have fixed him? I will never know!!

I know what you mean about feeling responsible partly. my Zack was nearly 30 lbs and they suspect that weight had a lot to do with it. they said it was organ failure and that because his back legs would not work any more he must have 'thrown a clot'.

personally, I like to feel that he passed from a broken heart, not that that is a painless way to go, but it helps me to know I was not in control. You see, my older cat passed less than two months before. I never knew how old she was as I was her 3rd caretaker. I think she was 'getting up there' but her illness was mysterious and took her very fast also. and for this reason, and the fact that we adopted Zack at age of 5 weeks and he bonded to her, I felt that perhaps Zack is better for where he is at, because he just wanted to see his mama again.

I dont thinkit helps me and my pain much, but I like to believe they are together.

In loving memory:
