Part 1:

“Would you like a leaflet?” the cheery woman asked a girl walking along the street slightly ahead of her group of friends.

“Get out of my face, bible basher!” the girl replied nastily and her friends behind her laughed. The woman smiled sadly as the girls walked away. The woman looked up to Heaven and sighed as she whispered. “She will be shown the way”

The group of girls were discussing amongst themselves how they should spend the afternoon. The leader of the group sneered at their usual suggestions,

“Shoplifting? There’s no excitement anymore. We never get caught and it gets boring. Plus, I don’t need any new stuff just now.”

“I say we go back and give that bible basher an earful for shoving that rubbish in our faces!” shouted the smallest girl of the group. She may have been the smallest, but she was the most violent. The leader, Hannah, shook her head as she spoke,

“I don’t think so. She’s got too much religion as it is. She doesn’t need ours. Come on, we’ll walk and see what we find.”

The girls walked for a while and before long met up with a rival gang. On most occasions, clashes between these two gangs resulted in nothing more than verbal insults and some minor skirmishes. Today, the girls were out for blood in revenge for an attack on their sister gang.

“Hey!” shouted Hannah “We’ve not forgotten about what you did to Louise! If we don’t sort you out today we’ll make sure it’s done before the week’s out. And you won’t hear us coming!”

“You’re all mouth. Bring it over here!” responded the rival gang. Hannah was enraged and ran towards the rivals. She had almost reached them when someone stepped out from the corner of the building. She didn’t know the bottle had been smashed over her head until she fell to the ground shivering. The rival gang fled as she lay in a pool of blood, listening to the shouts around her.

“Someone get an ambulance!”

“Are you ok? We didn‘t even see them hiding there, Hannah!”

“Let’s go after them!”

“Shut up and get an ambulance!!”

The girl on the ground lost focus of her ‘friends’. She felt as though she was falling. Their voices seemed distant. Everything went black.

“Wake up!” the voice told her. She kept her eyes closed in defiance.

“I told you to wake up. NOW!” Her eyes flew open against her will and she found she was in a never ending bright white room. There was no blood on the floor from her head.

Slowly she lifted herself onto her arms and was shocked to discover she had been lying on what looked like a glass floor. Only the floor showed her lying on the street, in a pool of blood, surrounded by people and paramedics. She turned around to see who had told her to wake up. Standing over her was a young man. She had never seen anyone like him. She marvelled at how someone could look so stern and serious, yet have eyes that smiled and were bright blue like the sky. Her eyes moved from his to the enormous wings which rested at either side of his body. She scoffed at herself for thinking her could be an angel.

‘After what I said to that girl earlier’ she thought to herself, ‘There’s no way such a thing could happen to me’

“Why don’t you believe it?” he asked her, having read her thoughts. “I’m standing in front of you. I’m not an apparition. Here,” he said holding out his hand to pull her to her feet. She held onto it and he lifted her up. He let her hand go and turned from her and walked away slightly. She looked at the wings which joined his back just below his shoulder blade and wondered if he would be insulted if she reached out and touched them. She reached out a hand before her moved from her reach and he turned around suddenly.

“Do not touch them.” he told her, “A tiger is the most beautiful animal in this world, yet to touch it would probably bring your destruction. Not unless you were properly trained to touch the tiger. Do not touch me for you have not been trained. You do not know when, or if, the tiger will bite.”

“I don’t know what you’re on about.” She told him sullenly. “I still think this is a dream.”

“Perhaps it is a dream, but even so, you must learn from it or what you see beneath your feet will be the last thing you see.”

He looked at her and she frowned back at him, not understanding.

He continued,

“Why did you offend that girl earlier? She did not offend you and yet you insulted her. Before you were even born, the Lord knew the kind of life you would lead. And so he put that girl there is the hope that you may take the leaflet. If you had picked it up, you would have noticed a date on it. A date of a church meeting. That date is also your mothers birthday and only three days away. You would have remembered and felt the need to buy her a gift and would not have become involved in a fight. And what you see beneath you would not have happened. But you didn’t. You insulted her, you insulted God and now look at you. If you die today, you die a sinner.”

“Look, whatever your name is, if your God exists and he’s so good, how come he gave me the kind of life I had. I mean before I decided to get by on my own? Does a loving God leave a young girl to be abused? Where was he when I was beaten up by my so called father? if you’re my guardian angel, why didn’t you help me?”

He spoke quietly, without anger or frustration. With only the desire to be heard.

“Your father was the sinner. Jesus said he does not come to help the righteous, but the lost. Your father needed to repent for his sins, and he done so. He has never strayed from the path God set for him since that day. You were a child and God gave you many, many opportunities to live the life he prepared for you but you refused to do so. The life you chose is your choice for God gave you the chance to live as he wished. But your ignorance prevented it. However despite everything you have done, you still have the chance to be saved.”

Hannah sat down on the floor and looked at her body lying in the street.

“Don’t worry, “ he told her, “I could talk to you for hours yet you will only be unconscious for a fraction of that time”

“What’s your name?” she asked him. He looked skywards and said nothing for a few moments. She watched him uneasily until he spoke.

“My name is neither someone nor anyone. It is not important. And now a question for you. Do you want to be saved, or continue the life you are leading and doom yourself for eternity?”

“I want something different.” was all she could think of to answer him. He nodded.

“Then difference is what you shall have. But you must open your heart. Make of this meeting what you will, but remember that you must learn from it. If you dismiss it as never occurring, you will never have the protection and love I know you seek in your heart. That is what you want deep down. And your behaviour screens your insecurity and loneliness. Know that you should never be lonely, for every step of your life I have been with you. Now, go and save yourself.”

He bent his head towards her and kissed her on the forehead over the spot were her mortal body was bleeding from. She felt herself again fall away and the bright room began to fade. Everything was black only for a second for she opened her eyes and found herself lying on the ground with the ambulance crew around her.

“I’m ok...” she began, “Really, I think I’ll be ok.”

“Well,” replied the female paramedic, “You’ll still need to go to the hospital, just to make sure” Hannah looked at her as she spoke and saw she looked vaguely familiar but couldn’t place her at all.

“You’ll go with the crew that’s about to arrive” said the male paramedic. Hannah shifted her gaze to him and couldn’t mistake those eyes. He smiled down at her and the female paramedic held out a piece of paper.

“Here’s a leaflet for you to read on the way” she said, and Hannah understood why she was familiar in that instant. She sat up and the male paramedic looked at her,

“Going somewhere?” he asked

“Not yet” she replied, “But soon I will be. I need to go see my dad.”

He smiled at her as the amublance appeared on the road behind him.

****Ok, I know I'm not exactly Tolkien. I used to write pretty decent short stories. Longer and better than this anyway. I just lost interest when I lost my boyf. I just didn't have any motivation to write anything. I guess this story is for me personally. I need to find my faith a bit more. That's why I used my real name as the name of the character. Although I'm not bad like the Hannah in the story.
