  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I am thankful for this "mature" forum. I tried to read some of the "regular" singles forum and was overwhelmed. I don't know if I remember what it was like to be that young and single...and to think that those kind of problems were really that significant in the grand scheme of life.

Yeah, I know...my age and "old fogey-ness" is showing. Maybe it is time to come up with some of those "when i was a young girl.." stories. I don't have time for a lot of things...but I think I could do that while shuttling the kids from one activity to another...or while my butt is freezing on the ice rink bleachers...

....when I was a single young woman, VCR's were so state-of-the-art that we used to rent the player along with the movies....(truth)

I remember those days too LOL!

Yeah my mom's "fancy" console stereo had an 8 track player. I have one remnant 8 track somewhere. It's a tape of a band that I knew and a song that they recorded on a Japanese label. Not a very good recording and I don't have a player anymore (thank the Lord lol) just a keepsake. It's more special to me because the guitar player isn't alive anymore.

My dad grew up with a literal outhouse for a number of years....complete with competing with his sisters for which pages of the Sears catalog got "used" first. Since there were more girls than boys...the tools were gone first.

Me, I remember thinking the best thing I could get for Christmas was one of those REALLY long phone cords so I could talk in privacy. (a private line like a couple of my friends was not even a possibility).

Now my kids both walk around with microscopic phones and mp3 players in their pockets (nope, I'm not willing to get them the fancy ones that do both).

It is amazing how so much changes in just a few years.

Yeah I remember when we got our oldest daughter at 15 her OWN phone and miraculously our phone quit ringing off the hook. She would come home and get on that phone and be on there for HOURS lol.
Now the only calls I get on my landline phone is from solicitors or creditors trying to track down family members lol

I remember when we got out 1st B+W TV. I was in the 2nd grade. I wish I knew how many inches it was. I'm sure it was less than 19".
Once I get my LR done I think I'll buy a flat screen to replace .. OH, waih I'm at 14 months without a TV! I guess I'm worse off than I was 51 yrs ago!

Ha ha I remember when we got our first B&W TV too! It was a 13 inch and it was on a metal stand with wheels. I was 6. Guess what the first thing I said about the TV was?

WOW! Is it PAID FOR? LOL :D

And it was. It seems in those days we never bought anything outright and when we did weirdly it was when my dad was out of work . He was a musician and my mom a bookkeeper. In fact when we bought this TV we lived in a one bedroom apt. My bed was in the dining room and my clothes were in the end of the hallway but not a closet. I never cared but looking back it was a small place. But we were happy then.

Now, just imagine any one of us attempting to start a relationship in this day and age, from those circumstances. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't think a woman would be very accepting of a man like that.

Thanks for reminding me of where I come from ... (I think it was just a year ago that my Brother got done shredding Mom's old bookeeping records. She's been retired for ... 15 years?)

We never kept the house as warm as we do not either. About the 1st of Nov. we put on longjohns and and never took them off till April. I also had wool pants and often wear sweaters. At least it was better then my father who talks about waking up to a little snow blowing thru the crack in the wall and drifting on his bed covers and that the water in the tea kettle was frozen when they got up in the morning to build the fires to cook breakfast.

Tho I do remember how nice it was to put up the chair to the wood kitchen stove and stick out feet in the oven to sip our hot chocolate! LOL

lol ... well, I was lucky and only had to walk one mile, but I carried all my school books plus a tenor sax. Tho if the river was frozen I could walk thru the woods across the river and across a lot to the school, then it was half a mile.

The school bus couldn't make it up our hill in the snow...so I did have to walk 1/2 mile in sometimes almost waist deep snow to get to the bus. And since the bus was on the top of the next hill...I DID have to walk uphill both ways! (the downhill side was sit on your butt and slide).

(I also was so vain that I didn't wear snowpants...so I'd have to keep a dry pair of jeans and shoes in my locker to change into when I got there.)

I'm jealous! I ski and have yet to get myself into conditions like this. Where was this?

Iowa...a farm in the middle of nowhere in eastern Iowa. When we lived on this farm, it was in a series of years (in the 70's) where it just wouldn't stop blizzarding. My brother and I dug caves into the snow in the ditch. We made one room large enough for us both to sit very comfortable...and had a tunnel to another room that would fit one person. Snow drifts were taller the machine shed. This was the year my dad walked out on us. We used to shovel the snow just far enough so that mom's car would get off the road because she no longer had access to the machine shed to park her car anyway and we had less distance to shovel her out to the road in the morning.

The hills "in town" ... Mt Vernon, IA (motto: "One Hill of a Town") ... were so steep that they would close them down when it got icy enough because there was no way anyone could possibly stop at the stop signs.

It was fun when I was a kid...I'm glad I don't have to drive there now though.

I loved snow tunnels. Dig many of them. We had a drift out beside the potato house where the drift would get 10 to 15 ft deep. It was hard enough to walk on. Used to dig rooms that we would stand up in. Over time the roof would get lower and lower. Eventually we couldn't crawl thru them any more.

Walked a mile home from school...on crutches!!! (Had a broken leg.)

Age 1-7 I never even had a TV or radio, nuttin'! My friend and I went down to the shore and made sand castles instead. Very warm memories.

Later in life we did get a B/W TV and a stereo record player...with a needle. Ahhh, electronic heaven. Three TV channels, unless the wind blew strong and dad had to go up on the 2-story house to straighten the antenna.

I'm cheating--I am not single, but I could not resist! Oh, yah---does anyone even remember having little round crystal radios with an earplug? One of my brothers loved making them! I would listen to the radio at night under the covers. The laundry was done at the laundromat, and my stepmom would bring them home wet and hang them outside. We had only one cutting board on which everything was cut--I remember the first time I used hair conditioner--Wow--what a difference! The kids played outside all afternoon and nobody worried about being kidnapped. The introduction of pantyhose!! Yah! No more garter belts or girdles! And--this is for the ladies only--No more pads and those horrible belts!!You never saw a commercial for them either!--Now--they have commercials about everything that used to be kept very private. Does anyone even blush anymore???--I was very stupid when I arrived in this country--My 2 older brothers were here first, then the younger one and me came over--they told me about that big box in the living room. You saw people on there and they could see you, too--I refused to go into the living room when the TV was on unless I was dressed nice and my hair was combed!! I caught on when I heard my brothers snickering and I stuck my tongue out at the person on the TV and they did not react!!--now, that's dumb!
