*shakes head* Ah, more problems within the public school system. Personally, I would go down there and tell the teacher that your child is uncomfortable and you are uncomfortable with her learning such material. If she gives you a lot of grief say their two favorite words "school board" and all of your problems will disappear.

Personally, I don't see Harry Potter as being any differant from Disney, Brother's Grimm, etc. I know there's a lot of rumors about J.K. Rowling, but all of the interviews she's done and they've asked about her religion she has told them she is Anglican. Also, I see public schools doing more harm than good, I prefer homeschool, but again, that's just me.

Pray about it and see where God leads you, He's more capable than any of us. ;)

I'm of the opinion that children will have to experience the world one day, and sheltering them will not benefit them. But I think 9 years old is a little young to be having to confront the trash that's being pushed on her.

If it were my child, I would write the excuse as nicely as possible, and then go f2f with the teacher, and school board if that is what it takes at the PTA.

I would aslo ask which HP is being read. Somewhere I heard that JK is progressively writing each book with more adult themes, so as to follow HP's growing up. The latest book is by far the darkest, and is the first HP movie to garner a PG-13 rating.

the next two movies that come out will be darker. I might not even watch them. Though I'm too far in the series now to not read the final book that comes out.

When I was in junior high, my teacher read "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" to the class. The book impacted me greatly, it heightened my yearning for spirituality above the level of attending church once a week. It encouraged me to discard everything I ever heard about God and go searching for the truth of God for myself. If that book, which is anything but Christian, hadn't awakened my heart to spirituality, I doubt I would be a Christian today.

This is a great opportunity for you to have meaningful conversations with your child about how magic is all make believe or illusions and that the Harry Potter books are about a boy who is parentless and has to raise himself in the company of strangers. You can talk about how lonely Harry is, how he longs for what your child already has--a home and a family-- and how Harry went to Hogwarts not just to get an education in wizardry, but to find some piece of his father, some way to get to know his dad, to find his place in the world by discovering his family's past.

I have nothing against the Harry Potter books, in fact I have read them all, etc. I don't think they are evil, blah blah blah.

Now that I've got that out of the way, I am surprised that people do read them in class to young children, especially because of all the hype that surrounds it. They should understand that many families do not like the books, or feel the books go against their religions. I am confused as to why they are allowed to read them?

Definitely write a letter if you are against it. I would do the same if they were reading a book to my child that I was against, no matter what book it is.

This is not the place to argue this, and I promise to drop it right after I give my opinion. I do not plan on "sheltering" my children, but I do not want them desensitized to things like I was. I want them to be fully immersed in God and His holy Word as possible. Plus, there are a lot of things schools teach that are just plain wrong, I plan to tell my children, "This is the answer you need to know for your tests, but this is what really happened".

I saw too many of my friends lost in the public school system because of desensitization. Yes, I took offense to what you said about sheltering, and maybe I am, but I believe my kids will be better for it.

good. But do you think a five year old child should sit in a theater and

*spoiler for movie*

watch one of the characters who was a main one thru the whole movie get killed by V... whatever his name is lackey? On a big screen. 5 year old sees this wide eyed blank stare of a dead body lying on the ground. I watched the movie yes. The kid probably had nightmares.

I agree. I think the rating should have been higher for that most recent movies. I mean, I'm 19 and I was still shocked by the death, even though I knew it was coming. I secretly hoped they would leave the death out, but I knew it was pivitol to the story line. Oh well.

The movies are getting darker as they go along, and I think the rating should be going up. There are more deaths, more seriousness as Harry gets older and the "end" is very near. The next book is the last and someone will die. I think the ratings should be higher than PG. Maybe even M15+.

But I'm just a scardey-cat... :holy:

I don't think it had really turned into a debate - one of the very very few threads with the words "Harry Potter" in them that didn't.... ;)

Nope I agree with you. Write a letter. It's your right and your daughter's right to either listen to the book or not listen. If the teacher has a problem with that, then go to the principal. I am sure there are other parents out there who have the same opinion as you and are probably wondering if they too should write letters.

That's not necessarily a bad thing! Too many people sit idly by when they should speak out. It's something that is very important to you and you have a right to say something. As I said before, I am really surprised that a school would allow their teacher to read Harry Potter in class. Amazed.

Is your daughter allowed to sit out? I'm sorry you have a hard time with the Principal. It's bringing back memories of school days....

So she's not even reading it? Just got it on tape so she can have a nap? Pfft..

cwolf20 was talking about the latest movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I do believe. The earlier books are, granted, less dark and more fun, but obviously they still have the content that a lot of people don't like.

Good luck. Let us know what happens :)
