My kids have a few Dr Zeuss (sp?) books, Hairy Mclarey (by Lynley Dodd, they have a hardcover set with at least 9 books in it) Can't think of what else we have on the bookshelf at the moment.

A lot of the books we are reading at the moment seem to come from the library so there is a wide selection of books. At the moment my 3 year old loves Maisy books (the ones with the mouse) I think it's got a lot to do with the bright illustrations.

My 6 year old reads whatever the school sends home to read, although lately he is reading different things he read a Magic School bus book this afternoon.

We have a collection of Maisy and Dr. Suess - both given to us for my baby shower. I requested no toys but books instead and ppl gave us lots of books We've filtered out some (donated for younger kids etc) and are chaning around what we have.

Like most other parents, we have this book as well. We understand that it's considered mandatory reading (like Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird), but am I the only person who thinks that this book is highly over-rated?

Another one to the "must have" list is anything by Sandra Boynton. Particularly for 1 - 2 yr olds.

We have tons of books and pick more up each week at garage sales, book fairs etc. My teen still loves to read, better than video games according to him. My 4 year old is learning to love them as well. For us the key to love reading is to have lots of books around, read to them daily, let them see you reading and discuss how amazing the story is and what they can learn from it.

The great thing is that after your kids outgrow them they can be recycled to schools, hospitals, shelters etc. and the next generation gets the joy of them as well.

How to Catch an Elephant by Amy Schwartz and Food Fight by Carol Diggory Shields - those aren't well-known books, but they're favorites around here! Very cute. I've read them out loud so often that I no longer have to look at the words.

We also have lots of books full of facts about bugs, animals, plants, etc. The kids love to study them on car trips.

Oooohhh... that is a good one!

I really love 'There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly' it's SO much fun to read. I've read it so much that I know it off by heart!

Also for the Aussie's out there 'Wombat Stew' is pretty cool too!

• Anything Eric Carle!!! I love his work.
• Sel Silverstein (another classic, I used to sit over his books for hours as a kid, I loved it and as an adult I still enjoy reading it)
• Rainbow Fish (there is a small series now)
• Aesop's Fables (excellent way to teach morals)

Those are great for any age.

What age bracket do you have in mind?

I have a 4.5 yr old and a 6.5 yr old but I usually purchase for older so I can read to them and they can grow into the books They do read to me on the easier ones though.

I have girls, lol, and a rather Charlotte Mason-y approach to the books we have for the girls, so this may or may not be beneficial, but these are some books that we have truly adored over the years :

Little Bear (the original book)

The Giving Tree

The original Pooh books and poetry

Little House on the Prairie Books

Anne of Green Gables Books (we're reading them together now)

Alice in Wonderland

The Princess and the Goblin (this is hands down my girls' favorite story ever)

I'm going to second Redguard on the Sandra Boynton books. My fave is "But Not The Hippopotamus" (a hog and a frog do a dance in a bog), but my 3 year old adores "Moo, Baa, LaLaLa", and "The Barnyard Dance" is a must - even my 14 yr old and 12 yr old still participate in acting it out.

"How The Grinch Stole Christmas", Dr. Seuss
"Horton Hears A Who", Dr. Seuss (a person's a person, no matter how small)
"Say Hola To Spanish" and "Say Hola To Spanish, Otra Vez (Again)"
"Why The Banana Split", I don't recall the author & the bookshelf is a mess
"The Bad Child's Book of Beasts"

Your 6.5 year old might like some of the Captain Underpants books, if you have a boy. If a girl, I have very fond memories of "Mandy", by Julie Andrews. Also, any horse book - "Black Beauty", "The Black Stallion", "The Indian Rider", etc.

I could go on for days. My "kids" book collection numbers in the hundreds at this point. We love to read.
