• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I posted a question similar to this at another message board before.

For me, this especially relates because Nine Inch Nails is generally depressive music. Seeing as this is what I listen to most, I guess you can say it brings down my mood. It actually gives me comfort in relativity though; I can relate to the words Trent sings and that especially makes it addictive. Music has the ability to make me cry. Powerful songs with powerful lyrics. (Like for example Frank Sinatra's "My Way" is a major tear-jerker.) Definetly not talking about this "emo-punk" music, though.

I wanna sink slowly without getting wet
Maybe someday, I won't be so lonely
And I'll walk on water every chance I get"

does any1 else get emotional listening to music, when i feel like this i turn to the same songs just for lyrics and it makes me feel worse, they are rally meaningful words and it makes me more lost but i vant help it

Hi Native,

I used to listen to The Smiths back in college when I was depressed. I'd drink and sit in a dark room listening to dark lyrics. I DEFINITELY believe in the connection between music and depression. It may not CAUSE depression but it definitely makes depression worse. I beg you: please stop listening to music that depresses you when you are already feeling low. Think about and listen to something that is good, right, pure...

This doesn't mean you have to turn your radio dial to KHYMN or really happy clappy music if that isn't your style... but when you are already low listen to music that will lift you up or even no music at all. Call a friend, pray, read... anything to fill those unforgiving minutes. Just turn off the music that brings out the tears... unless of course it's that happy sort of uplifted crying.

I naturally gravitate towards sadder songs at any time in my life, so when I'm upset, or having a bad day, those are the songs I want to listen to...they're comforting in a weird way to me! They're also really really good if you want to have a good cry! There are those times when you haven't been able to cry and a good sad song will do that for you - sometimes that helps me - but then again I'm not clinically depressed or even sub-clinically depressed, so I don't know about those instances. I don't think I'd encourage anyone who is in that situation to listen to music that might cause them to do something harmful.

just my 2 cents!

Native,

Your last three posts are too cryptic for me to understand. Were you posting song lyrics or are you depressed because you've really been drinking? If you need somebody to talk to... I know I'm a complete stranger... but I've been where you are. PM me if you like. If you don't... just know that I really am praying for you.

Peace of mind to you,

LC

Certain kinds of music actually help to get me out of depression. There are also some songs that I listen to that depress me more. I always try to pick uplifting songs to listen to because it helps to keep me from getting too depressed.

i need music on almost all the time. if not...some kind of noise or whatever. i just don't like the silence.
i used to listen to the radio when going to sleep cause otherwise i couldn't fall asleep.

and so anyways, when i'm feeling badly, there are some types of music that make me feel worse. usually they're the lighter songs.
the others just make me stay the same. so in the end, i just choose those, and they may be dark lyrics. and sometimes they may make me feel worse...but then again not as chaotic as the ^ songs.

i listen to OLP when i'm feeling little bad. otherwise...nope.
