Age: 34

Height: 6'2''

Build: Thin and lanky, not much muscle to him at all.

Physical appearance: Murphy looks a good deal older than he is. His every movement, gesture, and even the sound of his voice give him the appearance of a man who has been stretched too far. His intense blue eyes are perpetually bloodshot and sunken. They practically leap out at you from the dark circles around them. He wears a long, unkept brown beard and mustache, and his hair is uncut, but receding.

The man dresses in fairly simple clothing, made mostly from heavy wool. A leather belt helps his faded tunic cling to his frame, and his legs are covered by worn, heavy trousers, covered in patches. He leans on a wooden walking staff, clutching a long, dark wool cloak to himself while struggling to keep his eyes wide open.

Personality and History:

Murphy Stillos has been a monk all of his adult life, and had even started off as an altar boy and acolyte in his youth. He knows the scriptures well, and is a servant at heart. He is humble, easily contented, and enjoyed quiet and solitude when he was not working for the community or monastery.

But the peaceful life that Stillos preferred was shattered in the course of a night. With his longing for quiet and seclusion came a complacency and disdain for the world outside the monastery. He condemned it all as sinful, wild, and not worth his time. If they wanted what he had, all the world could become monks and nuns, and let those without devotion die off in their own madness. Little did he know that madness was exactly what would come of his lifestyle.

One night Murphy's life from that moment on was foreshadowed by a terrible dream. First came a vision of the very Lord he'd spent his life in service to. God's visage was hidden, and Murphy fell down unable to move, shocked to the core by the holy being before him. He felt love coming from Him, but all the terrified monk could focus on was the anger and disappointment he felt being directed towards him. "Thou hast served the Lord with a tightly clenched fist, Murph Stillos!" cried a herald angel, his eyes and hair ablaze as he addressed Murphy.

"You value your own comfort over that of your fellow man, seeing a world in suffering as a world that is mad! You condemn the down-trodden, the weak, and the suffering for their plight, putting them in line with the evil men who cause their suffering! You are no different! You lurk within your abbey as a corrupt noble lurks within his castle, caring not for those beyond its walls!

But in His divine mercy," the angel thundered, "The Lord provides you with a chance at redemption! So that you will repent, and never again fall into slothful complacency, The Lord lays a burden upon you! Only when you have truly devoted yourself, without fear of death or any care for your own welfare, shall it be taken from your shoulders!"

As the Angel completed Murphy's sentence, he and the Almighty faded from sight. Darkness grew around the heavy-hearted monk as the glorious beings vanished, and he began to shake with terror in the void he was now alone in. It only grew worse when he learned he was not alone.

A dark, terrible, indescribably evil voice growled into his ear, "Fortunate wretch... now you shall experience the closest you can be shown to Hell, that you may never suffer the real thing."

For that night, and every night after since then, Murphy was plunged into a constant state of fear, terror, suffering and guilt. From the moment he begins to dream to the moment he awakes screaming, he will endure hellish nightmares, and feel everything that happens to him. As far as Murphy will tell you, he has been beaten, burned, devoured, slaughtered, tortured, and scared out of his mind more times than he can, or ever wants to count.

He hangs from the edge of sanity, struggling not to fall into madness. Wandering the world, he seeks to do good deeds to alleviate his suffering. He is weary from tortured and insufficient sleep, but fears sleep more than anything in this world. For this reason, he's grown bold when times of peril arise. He continues on, helping those beset by bandits, helping put out fires, and any other deadly situation in which he might do what is right. Day after day, he tries to atone for the sins of his heart, longing for the day when he will give the service that satisfies his Lord.

Power: The only means this ordinary man has been given in his daunting task is the ability to unleash his nightmares upon the unrighteous. When he sees evil being done, he may threaten the enemy with visions of what awaits should they not repent; visions so lifelike that his illusions have become effective enough to cause people to think they are truly being attacked by the stuff of his nightmares.
