There are a few options here. First is that the us use is as we often say when royalty spoke, and is a side effect of the King James Bible translation, second is that God was talking to the Arch-angel Michael, His firstborn of Creation and finally He could have been referring to the trinity.

Cheers,

I've been away for a while, but I'm back now.

Genesis 1:26 - "And God said, 'let us make man in our image.'"

Who was he talking to? :scratch:
It's a way of trying to tell the story. We have no choice but to talk about God to some extent in our terms because we simply don't have the concepts or language to do otherwise. If you had asked the author(s) of Genesis 1 the same question I suspect they would have laughted at you, and then told another story.

Unlikely, as that construction is used only 4 times in the OT, out of hundreds of times that God speaks. If God used the "royal sense", you'd see it more often used. Further, while "us" would go along if it were the royal sense, the plural verb used in the Hebrew here would not. It's the verb that's plural, the "us" is not in the Hebrew, it's added to translate the plural verb into English.

Also unlikely, as this suggests that angels took part in creation. There is no indication that anyone other than God is the creator.

Why would they speak to each other? I mean, they're all the same God YHWH.
This is a woefully poor comparison, but please bear with me:

Remember "Monty Python and the Quest For the Holy Grail?" Remember that 3-headed monster that Sir Robin bravely ran away from?

Now, there are important differences, a key one being that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have a great unity of will. But God is one God, with three distinct Persons to Him.

Genesis 1:26 - "And God said, 'let us make man in our image.'"

Who was he talking to? :scratch:

God the Father was speaking to Jesus Christ His Son (His only begotton). He was not speaking to creation or the angels and the evidence is clarified here and shows who He was speaking to:

Hebrews 1
1. God, who at various times and in different ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets.
2. has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds
;
3. who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
4. having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
5. For to which of the angels did He ever say: "You are My Son, today I have begotten You''? And again: "I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son''?
6. But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: "Let all the angels of God worship Him.''
7. And of the angels He says: "Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire.''
8. But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom.
9. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions.''
10. And: "You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands;
11. They will perish, but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment;
12. Like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not fail.''
13. But to which of the angels has He ever said: "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool''?
14. Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?

Jesse Duplantis had a vision/experience one time, where he saw Jesus walk out of the being of God the Father, as if they were one and also distinct.

He asked Jesus where the Holy Spirit was, and Jesus said "on earth" -- which is consistent with Jesus' teachings, that He would send the Holy Spirit to take His place and support us... God residing within us.

I don't expect you to believe the vision; it was just a way of trying to describe the Trinity. It's a topic that many of us let rest until it makes more sense later.
