  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Absolutely HILARIOUS. Funny from the very first line all the way to the final line. And I'm not just using that as an expression - both those lines and scenes are absolutely hilarious. My friend and I were absolutely laughing our heads off the entire movie, both from the intentional comedy and the fact that so often, Jolie's character was sooooo much like my friend (also named Jane... coincidence? I think not :p) and that Pitt's character was soooo much like me (Mr. Smith... Mr. Schmidt... same name, different language ;)). I highly recommend this movie - no nudity, a handful of swears but half the time you barely notice the swears. Absolutely going to be a classic for a long time. Go check this movie out!!!

Let's see....

MR AND MRS SMITH:

PROFANITY - 1 F-word, 9 scatological terms, 6 anatomical terms, 9 mild obscenities, 8 religious exclamations.

WOW!

As a Christian I would feel convicted to endorse this movie to someone else. Trash in, trash out. I guess it is all in what you are used to hearing.

Your call then. If you really have a hard time finding humour in things that aren't squeeky clean, then so be it, this movie isn't for you. But if you happen to not actually care and don't find yourself profoundly affected by swears go see this movie. It is well worth the money.

Also, one quick question - how could you legitimately "endorse" this movie based simply on it's language content (which I considered rather tame). Did you go see it? Did you have a chance to really laugh at all the satire and puns about marriage and all the associated quirks - "little secrets", "Women - they're always trying to kill us.", etc... Or did you decide to close your mind to one of the few well-written and clean comedies that's been released for some time now. By clean, I mean no nudity, no toilet-bowl humour ("Dude, listen to this fart!!!" - something common like that is found in most comedies and even most children's comedies), few swears and hey, promotion of marriage and saying "I love you." to the ones you love.

On that site you showed, most of the Sex/Nudity qualms, they are between a husband and his wife. Nothing extremely provocative - Brad Pitt's bare chest, Angelina Jolie's legs/mid-drift. Dancing sensually with each other, as man and wife. Having sex with each other, as man and wife. Finally having cured their problems with an inactive sex life (the comment about the marriage counsellor asking about their sex life). I really scratched my head reading that site. Yes, there are a few scenes that could be... considered immoral (Jolie's character having to pretend she's a hooker hired to perform S&M on her mark before she completes her contract) or at least questionable.

Now, I understand you have different values than I do, or obviously you wouldn't be looking at a site that glosses over key details (sex between a married couple - what is wrong with that? Especially since all that is shown is simply them lying down in bed kissing then having breakfast in the morning. No "graphic sex" scenes of any sort.) As to the violence - did they expect a movie about professional assassins to have no sort of violence? Frustration is setting in as I read more and more of this site.

"A man appears to have what could be lipstick on his collar." Hmm... let's think about this for a second. The movie has already satirized and made light of some marital problems and is showing how often things can be mistaken for being evidence of an unfaithful spouse when in actuality, they have nothing to do with being unfaithful. The "lipstick"... I thought it was pretty clear that it was blood... which makes sense as he is an assassin. The other thing that was being made light of was the removal of the wedding bands whenever they were on a job.

Anyways, make your judgements from afar, I'm going to see this movie again tonight with my best friend and some other buddies.

I still strongly suggest this movie to anyone who wishes to have a thouroughly good time at the theatre.

Wroth- no need to get upset, man.

You downplayed the foul language, I checked on it, and found different. As a Christian, I don't think God would want me watching something like that. If I am going to be criticized for preparing what my mind takes in - then to God be the glory. Just b/c a movie is what one call's "good" in all other areas is not an official okay to claim foul language as "barely noticeable".

As far as endorsing a movie and calling myself a Christian at the same time, I think the two need to compliment each other, don't ya think? If I can't recommend it within the church walls or let's go as far to say even Jesus Himself, then it is not worth watching....but like I said in my previous post "it's all in what you are used to listening to". I think a good analogy for Christians is this- would you watch it if Jesus had the next seat to you?

No regrets, man. No regrets.

Heh, I probably would watch it with Jesus right beside me. I found pretty much nothing in there to be offensive to the point that I would be ashamed to talk about it with my pastor or members of my church. I actually met a few today who were asking me about it before their baptism - I highly suggested it again. I told them that yes, there were swears and implied sex, but nothing that I saw out of the ordinary or offensive.

And yes, I am used to hearing swears and lewd comments all the time at work. And I DO get offended and sometimes have to move into another room or stick my headphones on. It's not something I particularily enjoy and I most certainly understand that they aren't words that should be flung around with reckless abandon. However, their use in this movie is something I barely noticed. I had to pay attention tonight to pick out most of the swears/curses. I honestly did not hear many the first time around and even the second time around most kinda just "glanced off" me. I just don't think condemning a VERY FUNNY movie for a handful of words is something I find useful or constructive. Like I said before, it is your choice. However, I think you are truely missing out on a very fun and humourous movie and a funny look at marriage. The juxtaposition of the two lives adds so much humour into the movie - Angelina Jolie's character idly spinning her chopping knife in her hand as she is preparing dinner, Brad Pitt's character's hidden stashes of weapons and their locations in the house, Jolie's character forgetting to remove her fishnet stockings after the "hooker" hit and then going to a block party and having the hostess notice and stammer at them, etc... Some very funny scenes given very "deadpan" by both actors.

This movie, I noticed tonight, was not bloody or gory at all. There is a scene where Mr. Smith gets a knife in his leg and you notice blood, but the removal of it is off camera. Most of the violence is bloodless or off camera - Mr. Smith carrying out a hit on some mobsters, all you see is his muzzle flash before the camera ducks behinds some boxes while you hear the rest of the shots. I really paid attention this second time through to the humour and violence and sex aspects of it, and I gotta tell ya, it is better than probably 95% of the movies out there. I thouroughly enjoyed it (maybe because the characters reminded me so much of my girlfriend and I...) and I still feel it is a VERY GOOD movie, even with the few swears it has in it.

PS, I'm not upset, I think just a little bit frustrated. I agree a lot of times with reviews by chrisitan communities and stuff about movies, but this time I think it's an unfair condemnation of the movie - this one is very well done, with superb acting, great humour and puns, some satire in there and for the most part, very clean fun. Like I said, to condemn it for a handful of words just is not very fair. I understand your desire to stay away from movies loaded with immorality and sin, but this, in my eyes, really isn't one of those you should keep yourself away from. Just sit in on the first 20 minutes of the movie even, I know my theater out here has a 30 minute money-back garentee if you aren't impressed with what you see. I think the first 20-30 minutes should give you enough to laugh about to sit through the rest and enjoy it.

Heh, trust me... it is. Both times I've been there the theatre has been so packed that I ended up in the second row once and the front row, center next. And yet it was still a terrifically fun time. Everyone in the theatre was laughing throughout the movie. It is quite worth the movie to see it. I'll likely go see it again next weekend, that's how good I think it is.
