Moving to DC

Hi everyone! I am a South Carolinian who is moving to DC for graduate school. I am desperate for a nice, inexpensive place to live. I spent the entire day yesterday looking and I am getting discouraged!! I am pretty much sticking to Northern Virginia--Alexandria/Arlington. I think that the further I go into DC the more expensive it will get. I also have a roommate and she works in Old Town Alexandria.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anybody could give me some tips on where to look. Or, better yet, if anybody knows of a privately owned house/apartment for rent. I am finding that it may be better to rent from a person rather than a company.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you been to DC? Good luck is all I gotta say!

Are you dead set on the VA end of DC? I don't know if options are better - but you may want to look at the MD side as well. I have some friends that lived there right after college and commuted to DC for work/etc. The metro system is pretty good in DC - and it beats the traffic up there ANY DAY IMO.

I am here right now, in fact. My friend works in Va. so living in Md. would not be smart. We are not having much luck. Keep your fingers crossed!

I live in Southern Maryland, my mom, dad and I work in Virginia, me in Old Town Alexandria, my mom in Vienna and my dad at the Pentagon. Living in Prince George's county should not be a problem for you because the metro trains and buses go everywhere and make commuting to work easy. And Maryland housing is much cheaper than the nice parts of DC and VA. A lot of people working in VA live in MD and DC.

dunno, i've lived in alexandria for the past three years and it isn't too bad. if you have a car and can stand living away from the metro the price drops significantly. granted, i'm moving back to arlington because i'm tired of alex, but maybe i've just gotten used to (gulp) the insane prices around here.

PG county is "southern maryland??????" hmmm...not to rain on the parade of any terps fans here, but if you're going to be going to school full time in dc (gw, georgetown) i'd live in NW or in northern virginia. if you're going to be at catholic, parts of college park might be easier. depends on where you're going to school.
