  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anyone have any experience with acclimating a cat to moving? I wonder how mine is going to take it. We have changed stuff in our present domicile, such as having installed new carpet, changed furniture, litter boxes, feeding bowls, etc. She has never had a problem, and responds with curiosity. But moving completely is more extreme so I wonder what to expect.

I heard a story where a couple moved at least one state away, with their cat. They went on a long vacation, and the cat panicked. It walked to the old house. I think they're more attached to you than they seem.

I also heard of a dog that got lost in a park. It arrived home before the owners did--roughly a ten mile walk.

This isn't helping, is it?

First, make sure kitty goes to the new house in a carrier, with a towel over it. The cats can find their way back otherwise. A towel over it isn't foolproof either, but it helps. I would recommend either having all of her stuff there already or bringing it with you. Put her in the bedroom for a little while, make sure your things are in there. Let her get acclimated a little bit at a time, if there's a bathroom attached to the bedroom, go ahead and open that door so she can wander in there. After a little bit, depending on your cat, let her explore the rest of the house. Some cats hide under the bed for the whole day, some are wanting out after 5 minutes to explore, it just depends on the cat. I've moved numerous times with my cats and never had a problem, so don't worry too much. Just be careful when opening doors to the outside so she doesn't wander out.

Thanks guys for your advice! That is what I was going to do -- send her stuff ahead of us (the couch with her fur still on it, the chairs with her fur, etc, so it has her scent) and introduce her gradually. I *think* she'll probably be ok, based on her reactions to change thus far....

I didn't know that about the towel. That's a really good idea...that way the trip in the car won't frighten her as much, too.

Surprisingly enough, yes, they will try to find their way back. Cats are creatures of habit and some will try to go "home" even if their people are at the new house. My parents had one cat when I was in high school that probably went back to our old house (about a mile and a half away) at least 2 or 3 times. The last time he did it, we stuffed him in a box and closed it up for the drive home. He never went back again.

The towel over the carrier really helps keep cats calm in the car. I've driven long distances with cats (Houston to Seattle, Seattle to Dallas, and Dallas to Lafayette, LA) and they tend to relax more with the towel over the carrier.

I moved two weeks ago, taking my cat from the only home he's ever known for the first 7 years of his life and away from the other 3 cats and 2 dogs he's lived with. He hid under the bed for the better part of 3 days and is completely acclimated and at home here now.

Sabina -- that is very comforting. Same here -- she is 4 and she has been with us since she was 6 ms. She acclimated within a few days when we first brought her home, and has been welcoming and inquisitive in regard to any changes, so I can't see us encountering any major problems. But I do want to be prepared for anything. :)

Thanks everyone - the advice has been so helpful. Even as we are packing she doesn't seem disturbed with the boxes and stuff.
