Motherboard question.

I have to get a new motherboard but not a new CPU. I had a Asus A7M266 with a 1.4 GHZ Athlon CPU. The bus speed on the motherboard with 266 mhz. What if I purchase a motherboard with a higher bus speed than my CPU can handle? Can I lower it to 266?

depends on the bios settings. recently i bought a new motherboard and it is a chipset capable of 400 mhz fsb (because a bad processor i tested burned out my old one. ) i currently have a 900 mhz athlon 200 fsb processor working in it till i can upgrade my processor. and such was the case for my old motherboard.

Check the motherboards documentation. It should tell you what front side bus speeds it supports. But generally, yes, all motherboards will slow themselves down; its just a matter of how slow they will go

I think the problem would very rarely be in fsb speed, but on Socket compatibility. That is, if the CPU will fit on the new motherboard. I'm pretty sure you are buying a Socket A motherboard. If that is so, I'm pretty sure it should work out with your CPU.

chipsets have a big factor not just socket.

i had a soyo that wouldnt tak any cpu newer then a Polomino core athlon. and after it i had a biostar that wouldnt take anything newer then a throughbred core athlon. and now i am using a asus that will take all cpu up till a 64 athlon. (those are differant sockets i think) but it is finicky about the rams fsb versus the cpu fsb and you have to flash the bios to install the semperon core cpus
