  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Wow. 120mm mortar rounds are the largest used. Their practice rounds likely have less HE (high explosive) than their regular rounds. I would think the effects would not be felt for more than a mile or so. When we drop 2000 lb bombs from high altitude in Utah or Nevada, there are homes within 15-20 miles or so. They would not allow us to drop them if the effects could be felt at these homes. 120mm mortar rounds are much much smaller and hold much much less HE than our 2000lb bombs. Are you sure it's not something else?

They actually sounded louder and closer when we lived off post (15min away). Now we can still here them, and they go off EVERY day. I'm pretty much used to it but every now and again it will wake me from my sleep. I was thinking last night, these sounds can't be a good sound for those getting back from IRAQ!

<former artilleryman> Its so loud because the artillery is firing several guns on the same target, which means a whole bunch of rounds landing in the same place at approximately the same time. If its 155mm, then its going to be very loud and the sound will carry quite a ways. The gunline where the rounds are being fired is just as loud, and the earth is literally shaking from the recoil of the cannons. Takes a while, but you eventually learn to sleep like a baby through it :)

They sound even louder when the bad guys are dropping them on you! I think that was one of the most scariest times in my life. I dislike loud noise now and was not very good company this year at the fireworks. I could not wait to leave and go home.
