I was reading 1 John this morning, and I got to chapter 5 and it talked about sin not unto death. I asked some catholics about it, and they said that is where the idea of mortal sin comes from. I was wondering what the baptist view on mortal sin, and also on 1 John:16 is.

I think the answer lies in the very next verse:

All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

Like I said, all sin separates us frim God, not just the mortal sin, but the venial as well.

But are you saying that this section of scripture is not discussing two different things? I ask because I am not sure where your coming from.

I do not think anyone here is going to argue with you concerning the fact that there is no "venial" or "mortal" classification of sins such as the Roman Catholics believe, save the good doctor perhaps.

I tend to agree with you. As a Baptist I believe that the sin that leads to physical and spiritual death is the rejection of Christ..

If you believe and accept Christ as Savior & Lord, you die only a physical death but have both a physical and spiritual birth.
If you reject Christ, you have only a physical birth. But you have both a physical and spiritual death.

the consequences of sins are different. If a man is murdered with a gun is life is taken
but if a person is lied on his life may just be ruined

Okay, then, tell me where Jesus' shed blood can't cover which part of either sin?

Jesus blood sheds each and everyone of our sins no matter what happens.
We can always ask for forgiveness.
