What is it that they want to be called? Or was the admonition only to what they call themselves? Or does it only apply to the name of their church?

Should they stop calling their church the Mormon church? Should they stop calling themselves Mormons? Will they change the name of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir?
What about the Book of Mormon? What about The JST?

A rose by any other name is still a rose. rose.gif

Now do we call them LDS or Latter-day Saints or "members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?" Or does the change only apply to those who follow the president of their church church?

  • When referring to Church members, the terms "members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" or "Latter-day Saints" are preferred. We ask that the term "Mormons" not be used.
    • "Mormon" is correctly used in proper names such as the Book of Mormon or when used as an adjective in such historical expressions as "Mormon Trail."
    • The term "Mormonism" is inaccurate and should not be used. When describing the combination of doctrine, culture and lifestyle unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the term "the restored gospel of Jesus Christ" is accurate and preferred.

I will have to refer to that religion as Mormonism because it is not a restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Yeah, that's not a very good description. It's good to call people what they want to be called. But when it requires you do say something untrue, that's not going to happen.

In other words---if we can't convert them, force them to call us what we truly are not. Their believes have nothing to do with what Jesus believed in, preached and taught. He was all about the scriptures--"It is written" being His most frequently used expression. They want to denigrate the word of God in order to advance the teachings of JS. They should more accurately be called the Church of Joseph Smith, esp. since no one can attain this so called exaltation without his say so. Smithies, Smithites is far more accurate even than Mormonism.

I certainly hope this 'style guide' is meant to guide only LDS-made publications, because otherwise it's pretty far out of line.

The above point doesn't even make sense, grammatically-speaking.

For example, the blurb that comes up from Wikipedia when you just type "Mormonism" into Google reads:

Mormonism is the predominant religious tradition of the Latter Day Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity started by Joseph Smith in Western New York in the 1820s and 30s.

To rewrite it as the LDS Corporation would want it, it would read:

The restored gospel of Jesus Christ is the predominant religious tradition of the Latter Day Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity started by Joseph Smith in Western New York in the 1820s and 30s.

This doesn't work because you already get that it's restorationist from the existing blurb, which makes "the restored gospel etc." sound at best redundant, and at worst incredibly confusing, since Restorationism as a movement or an approach to Christianity encompasses far more than just Mormonism. So you can't have one version of it be "the restored blahblahblah" and then nothing else be restored, because it's just as much part of these other groups' doctrine and self-conception that they and not Mormonism are the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, so unless you want to stump for Mormonism in particular, Mormonism's own belief in its narrative whereby it is right and all others are not is not very good grounds to start calling it "the restored gospel of Jesus Christ". Asking very nicely or pretending to be helpful in issuing guidelines so that reports may be more "accurate" does not make a lie not a lie.

And of course the only people who want to stump for Mormonism are Mormons, so yes, it's pretty transparent what this is.

Well, knowing what I do about Mormonism, the admonition is for Mormons/LDS only --- because they know that they can't scare us with the idea that our non-conformance will cause us to forfeit eternal life.

35395, Children’s Songbook, Follow the Prophet, 110

Adam was a prophet, first one that we know.
In a place called Eden, he helped things to grow.
Adam served the Lord by following his ways.
We are his descendants in the latter days.

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.
Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Enoch was a prophet; he taught what was good.
People in his city did just what they should.
When they were so righteous that there was no sin,
Heav’nly Father took them up to live with him.

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.
Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Noah was a prophet called to preach the word,
Tried to cry repentance, but nobody heard.
They were busy sinning—Noah preached in vain.
They wished they had listened when they saw the rain.

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.
Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Abraham the prophet prayed to have a son,
So the Lord sent Isaac as the chosen one.
Isaac begat Jacob, known as Israel;
Jacob’s sons were twelve tribes, so the Bible tells.

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.
Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Moses was a prophet sent to Israel.
He would lead them to the promised land to dwell.
They were slow to follow, or so it appears.
They were in the wilderness for forty years.

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.
Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Samuel was a prophet chosen as a boy.
Hannah promised God her son would serve with joy.
In the tabernacle, Samuel heard his name;
He was called by God and answered, “Here I am!”

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.
Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Jonah was a prophet, tried to run away,
But he later learned to listen and obey.
When we really try, the Lord won’t let us fail:
That’s what Jonah learned deep down inside the whale.

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.
Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Daniel was a prophet. He refused to sin;
So the king threw Daniel in the lion’s den.
Angels calmed the lions, and the king soon saw
Daniel’s pow’r was great, for he obeyed God’s law.

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.
Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Now we have a world where people are confused.
If you don’t believe it, go and watch the news.
We can get direction all along our way,
If we heed the prophets—follow what they say.

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.
Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,
Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

I was agreeing with you and adding my own comment as to why the guidelines are nonsensical. Sorry if that wasn't clear. :)
