I will have to refer to that religion as Mormonism because it is not a restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Sorry. Board doesn't want to show my post as posted so I inadvertently made several double post. . .
- The term "Mormonism" is inaccurate and should not be used. When describing the combination of doctrine, culture and lifestyle unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the term "the restored gospel of Jesus Christ" is accurate and preferred."
I certainly hope this 'style guide' is meant to guide only LDS-made publications, because otherwise it's pretty far out of line.
The above point doesn't even make sense, grammatically-speaking.
For example, the blurb that comes up from Wikipedia when you just type "Mormonism" into Google reads:
Mormonism is the predominant religious tradition of the Latter Day Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity started by Joseph Smith in Western New York in the 1820s and 30s.
To rewrite it as the LDS Corporation would want it, it would read:
The restored gospel of Jesus Christ is the predominant religious tradition of the Latter Day Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity started by Joseph Smith in Western New York in the 1820s and 30s.
This doesn't work because you already get that it's restorationist from the existing blurb, which makes "the restored gospel etc." sound at best redundant, and at worst incredibly confusing, since Restorationism as a movement or an approach to Christianity encompasses far more than just Mormonism. So you can't have one version of it be "the restored blahblahblah" and then nothing else be restored, because it's just as much part of these other groups' doctrine and self-conception that they and not Mormonism are the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, so unless you want to stump for Mormonism in particular, Mormonism's own belief in its narrative whereby it is right and all others are not is not very good grounds to start calling it "the restored gospel of Jesus Christ". Asking very nicely or pretending to be helpful in issuing guidelines so that reports may be more "accurate" does not make a lie not a lie.
And of course the only people who want to stump for Mormonism are Mormons, so yes, it's pretty transparent what this is.
I was quoting what the Mormon view is!!---Did you not read the rest of the post??
I was agreeing with you and adding my own comment as to why the guidelines are nonsensical. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
