  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mormon's limitations?

I've heard a few times now that Mormons are not encouraged to read or look @ publications, books, websites, etc. that go against their religion. Maybe not completely prohibited but @ least discouraged from. How much weight does this hold? Or is it just some good old fashion "hear-say"? Thanks.

It's hearsay. I have many Mormon friends that do those things. But a Mormon will tell you that we are all free agents, so the behavior of some does not dictate the rule for all. :|

No, Mormons (LDS) are not encouraged to research media that criticizes LDS theology / history / etc.

I find that fairly natural. Likewise, it is not my understanding that a mainstream Christian church would encourage their congregation to consult the Skeptic's Annotated Bible as part of edifying scripture study ...

It is not my understanding that a mormon's faith and/or membership in the church is questioned until they themselves question the theology of the church. Which is also perfectly natural.

Personally, since I am LDS, I have found that much criticism of LDS theology / history lacks true objectivity. When it is objective, I have found criticism interesting, and have appreciated broadening my understanding. However, nothing has been faith-shattering for myself, personally, yet.

True. :)

Still, it is not something we are encouraged by our leaders to do.

I guess no religious "higher ups" encourage the study or looking into ideas and beliefs that call their own into qestion. But in a way, i think they should. Some friends of mine that are Mormon kinda dodged the question when i asked them. They just said, "Why would i want to read things that i know are false to begin with." Anyways, thanks for the input.

I think that is a closed-minded approach.

I dont blame a faithful person for wanting to dodge a debate, but I would rather use the excuse -- why would I want to expose myself to something whose purpose would be to destroy my faith, or my call faith into question?

It is unfair to assume criticism is incorrect, but it is fair to assume criticism will, for the most part, be negative.
