I found this site to be helpful: http://www.utlm.org/

I have found that once you knw your own doctrine well, you can educate those who come to proselytize.
I agree here. Know what you believe and why and just share, no need to "preach" per-say. Your planting seeds not saving souls, that's God's job.

My position is this:
Firstly, don't preach to anyone cause it gets you nowhere fast.
If a mormon were to come up to me and ask me about my faith? I would tell them.
If they wanted to debate I would tell them that there is no debate and they are incorrect. I would use the bible and only the bible to prove my points and then be done.
The Great Commission tells us that firstly we should help the person who has never had the chance to hear the Word of God. To me a mormon is not an unbeliever, but is a mixed up believer. I am not saying that they are saved, but the Great Commission does not tell us whatsoever to worry about people's salvation, that is for God alone and He doesn't worry.
To be blunt again...it's not our commission to convert people or is it to argue points to others about the Word of God....we do enough of that to each other(orthodox christianity)!!!
Why would I waste the time trying to convince a Mormon that they are wrong about things when I can be teaching a person who's never heard of Jesus what He's all about? ;)

thanks for listening.

you make some excellent points here - I remember hearing the folks on the White Horse Inn say something to the effect of we'll likely be surprised by some of the folks we meet in heaven - including some with faulty doctrine. Not saying all Mormons will be in heaven, but neither will all Baptists.

thanks for the link - it brings another thought to mind. I've heard many say that they wouldn't read books such as the Koran or the Book of Mormon. I think that's a mistake - knowing where they're coming from is important because then we can go to Scripture to counteract their claim if they did want to argue (as NRB mentioned)

I am now working on witnessing to some Mormons, and my grandmother is an Ex-Mormon. I am currently intending on witnessing by questioning the fact that the Book of Mormon differs fundamentally from the other "revelations" of Joseph Smith. This is very important because most Mormons have almost zero clue what their church actually teaches. Many just think that it is just another denomination. After I have them sufficiently doubting their faith, I will bring out the big guns against their "prophet" Joseph Smith. I pray every night about this family, and I pray for strength in witnessing opportunities.

Interesting to note that the Mormon church focuses on converting Baptists because of some surface doctrinal similarity. Remember, Mormons deceive people as to their doctrine and most don't know their church's true doctrine so be weary when a Mormon tries to convert you.

I want to clarify something here....someone mentioned the NWT(New World Translation) of the "bible". That is published by the WatchTower Bible and Tract Society....ie, Jehovah's Witnesses.
Every mormon I've known has used the KJV.

Thanks for listening.

Mormon doctrine is basically polytheistic. Jesus is A God but not THE God the Father of the OT. There are in fact many Gods. God used to be a man like us, and we can one day be like Him and have our own little planet to 'rule'. Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers.

God the Father has a physical, flesh and bones body. To make Jesus he had sex with Mary (this is one of the more odd doctrines and one some mormons will not admit to, but it is there to be read).

This is just a sampling of their strange doctrines. They also teach that the 10 lost tribes of the Jews actually came to the western hemisphere and that the native americans of north and south america are their decendents - despite the fact that we can scientifically show that none of these native peoples are semitic in origin. Jesus of course came to this hemisphere to preach in the Americas.

The entire story of how Joseph Smith 'discovered' these truths is quite a story in itself.

To the original posters question of how to 'preach' to them, it is a difficult thing. Mormon outreach is not my specialty. But I will say that I know that in general it is (like reaching, say, muslims) a longer process you must take a view of, and you will in most cases need to do the work relationally.

They do not use our version of the Bible, theirs is called the New World Translation, and it is frought with errors in translation, most famously in the first chapter of the Gospel of John. Unless you are well versed in the issues of the translation, and the original language in those areas though I would not bring this up, as they will argue.

thats not entirely accurate........ though they do give a difference between God and Jesus( which is absurd, they are one and the same). they also claim that Jesus and Lucifer are brothers, which is equally absurd, because to insinuate that would be putting Satan to an equal footing with God Himself, which would refute the truth that God is allpowerful. I happen to have friends who are mormons and though they dont exhibit the cult-based faith that everyone else does (i.e. their brainwashing) They do happen to follow the mormon beliefs to the letter. Its almost impossible to bring them to their senses without making them see things they dont want to see, which is counter-productive because they will just disbelieve it.....

I agree with the prayer as a solution for them, but also try to work on them from a scholarly point of view. When a mormon elder asks you if they can preach to you, ask if you can preach to them, if the agree then their minds are open enough to plant the seed... if they refuse, then the soil is dry and bereft of the water of life... in english that means that they arent willing to be preached to, and that trying to do so will get you nowhere.
