  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I can not find any information about this on the Internet. I live in the ST. Louis area. The other day on TV I caught the last few moments of a talk with a Catholic priest. The subject was baptism. I was hearing something to the point that baptisms would be repeated as a further dedication and assertion of our continued devotion to Christ. The Priest was excited about this new form of worship that would be added to the Church.

Please tell me that I was dreaming and should go back to sleep.

Or have you heard anything on this subject?

Um, was he perhaps talking about when the priest goes up the aisle with an aspergillus (or oftentimes fir branches in Advent) and sprinkling the congregation with holy water to remind us of our baptismal promises? Or maybe something about the usage of holy water in general? I could see that if you came into a conversation like that in the middle, you might get very confused. However, there is only ONE baptism for the remission of sins, so if it isn't what I just said, I am not quite sure what this guy was talking about (new devotion, etc., etc. etc.). HTH!!

BTW, an aspergillus is the little wand the priest uses to sprinkle holy water over the congregation - it typically occurs near the beginning, after the "Lord have mercy; Christ have mercy; Lord have mercy" or other penitential rite is done. It reminds us of our constant call to be holy through penitence for our sins.

There is such a thing as conditional baptism, in which a person is unsure if his/her baptism was valid, or even is unsure whether or not he/she has been baptized (or in the case that no one knows if the person was baptized in infancy.) In this case, the priest can confer a conditional baptism to make sure the person is baptized. (After acceptance of Jesus Christ as savior, of course.)
