  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Quite simple. Cost. The resources required to make a real difference are enormous. How much does a tree cost? Not that much. Transport to get it to where it will help? Probably much more. Labour to plant it? Water to keep it alive until it is established?

Australia is a dry and hot place except for a coastal strip. Tree plantations are not unusual, but they can be hard work. You can't just plant a tree and walk away, at least in the initial stages. A number of plantation failures here have shown that to be true.

Cape Coral, FL uses reverse osmosis to purify brackish water for household use. This brackish water is less salty than sea water. They get $90/mo water and sewer bills. If you flood the interior with water, you will get a huge water bill.

Conifers do pretty well without much attention. They also extract moisture from the air as well as from the ground. Red (Norway) pine plantations are common where I live. Once planted they are on their own. They are fast growing and so can potentially sequester a lot of carbon fairly quickly. And while the thinnings are used for making paper the larger trees are often used in log home construction.

Apparently the big decrease in emissions from vehicles and airplanes, due to Covid shutdowns and restrictions hasn't helped any.

Like a diet, you don’t see the results of your new lifestyle right away it takes time for those changes to start to be noticed. The ice melting is still from the previous decades of human habits. Also, in order for the effects of the diet to be maintained, the diet has to be maintained. If we go back to our normal ways after COVID, you’ll notice almost no effect from this past year.

People are cognitively biased against things that are really big, are really small, are really far away, or take a long time.

It’s a given that counteracting the effects of catastrophic climate change will be expensive. That’s lower than my water bill.

True. Even as COVID cases decrease deaths are increasing.

People don't think much outside of themselves. Their life spins so tightly around their head that they can't see past it.

Antarctic and arctic ice are cyclical. Remember Al Gore's prediction about no more Arctic ice. That was supposed to happen decades ago. It didn't.

This stuff is all cyclical. The climate changes. It always has. There used to be forest in the Sahara, and jungle in Siberia. And glaciers covered over half the US. Frankly, it looks like the glaciers are coming back right now. :D

Here is a youtube playlist on the subject that is backed by so much science it gets mind numbing after a while:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL25om63gd1VoP7m5VLuVcLOwKh-FB7Rxp

It is important to note that all human activity produces CO2 and it is a necessary element for life to exist. It can be deadly in the same way water, necessary for life, can drown you. But the whole AGW/climate change thingee was fabricated as a tool to, once people are convinced it's real, cause them to give their rulers the power to control any aspect of our life that produces CO2.

That means EVERYTHING.

And that's the goal. Don't fall for it. Educate yourself. Trust the science, not the fake science. Don't trust politicians and 17 year old girls.

The earth has too many people, with entirely too wasteful and destructive lifestyles.
I don't think so. I might add that western civilization is having a population crisis of SHRINKING numbers. It is the third world countries that are doing their best to keep the population up.

I also figure the earth could maintain a high quality of life for about 200 billion people, give or take...especially as technology improves. Heck, we used to be mostly farmers just to make sure everyone got fed. Now, any famine is caused by politics. There is plenty of food.

TWO HUNDRED BILLION!? :swoon:
At least. People really don't grasp just how much empty space there is on this planet, and how much land is not used for animal or plant life. I have little doubt that, given another century, mankind will make every square inch of land and most of the ocean capable of supporting life either as living space or food source. I heard once a few years ago that the entire population of the planet today could live in Texas, with a lot of room to spare.

Did you expect 10 months of decreased growth to somehow offset 150years of continued consistent growth?

Your post makes the false premise that something needs to be offset.
