  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I wish people would stop calling them hobbits... What if we come across a living population? I can just see all of the CNN reporters zooming in and asking the poor villagers "What is it like to be a hobbit?"

We made it what, a day, before giving our newest closest relatives an insulting nickname? Why are people so obsessed with size, anyways?

The disease that was suggested was microcephaly, not anything nutrient related.

Malnutrition does not result in teeth having different numbers of roots, lack of a chin or the very small stature recorded in these individuals.

It's a variation of the "palaeontologists are stupid" argument, really, isn't it? They're too stupid to see the difference between a malnourished H. sapiens and a different species.

Barrel scraping, I'd say.

The microcephaly explanation was a valid hypothesis when we only had the one fossil. Now we have several, which the microcephaly hypothesis is not consisten with. This leaves us with the seperate species hypothesis.

Hey now, everybody knows that the lay creationists are the only ones that know anything (edited by staff) about archaeology and anthropology. Certainly moreso than someone with a dinky 20-30 years experience.

What are they supposed to do? Dwarf was already taken. I think the next diminuitive species gets Elves.

Would Halfling be any better?

I would hope that we would start calling them by what they call themselves, if they have developed language.

I don't think it is that insulting. I like hobbits.

Why are people so obsessed with size, anyways?

Hehe, I don't think it would be appropriate for this thread.

Oh, sure... Yeah, I can see that happening...

Well, they could go crazy and call them by their name, Homo floresiensis.

For goodness' sake, other hominids don't have nicknames. Nothing for afarensis, or boisei, or erectus. When was the last time a reporter refered to new africanus specimens as "elves" or some other such nonesense? But all of a sudden a new, small hominid species pops up and it has to have a cute nickname so everyone can associate them with Elijah Wood...

It's absurd.

BBC: More Homo floresiensis found

Looks like they definately are a distinct species and not an example of a diseased Homo sapiens.

This BBC website shows evidence that they were a diseased population of Homo sapiens. Even if they weren't diseased though, calling any isolated group of Indonesian people a "distinct species" is a form of scientific racism practiced only by modern neo-Darwinist race theorists.

Not this racism tripe again.

Do we call other humans Homo sapiens sapiens?

For goodness' sake, other hominids don't have nicknames. Nothing for afarensis, or boisei, or erectus.

Lucy and Turkana boy come to mind. What is the difference between being named after a Beatles song or a race of made up people?

When was the last time a reporter refered to new africanus specimens as "elves" or some other such nonesense?

I've heard "Lucy's species". (or was Lucy aferensis, I always forget).

But all of a sudden a new, small hominid species pops up and it has to have a cute nickname so everyone can associate them with Elijah Wood...

It's absurd.

I wouldn't call it absurd, but it is a little over the top. Floresiensis just isn't as sexy as africanus, robustus, erectus, or other species names (habilis is my fave). I work with Group A strep and I hate it when it is referred to as the "flesh eating bacteria" or even worse "the flesh eating virus" so I can see your point.

A single, partial skeleton should not be considered enough to establish a distinct species.

Peace.

No human beings should be considered to belong to a distinct race or 'species' other than the human race.

Good thing that there are numerous specimens for each species, including H. floresiensis. Reread the OP.

H. floresiensis is no more a 'species' of humanity than H. indonesiensis is.
