  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It is TONIGHT, September 27, 2015.

The total lunar eclipse will last about one hour and 12 minutes, according to NASA. It will be seen in North and South America, as well as Europe, Africa, parts of West Asia and the eastern Pacific.

However, skywatchers can camp out early for the partial lunar eclipse, which will begin at 8 p.m. ET in the United States. As the planet's shadow dims the supermoon, this will create dramatic viewing opportunities for observers. The eclipse will reach its peak during the 10 o'clock hour, giving the supermoon a reddish, copper-like hue. The event should end after midnight.

I think there was a sun eclipse in the UK several years ago; do you remember?
I remember seeing a little bit of it, hard to see but we got a bit of shade - didn't last long though.

I don't think it lasted long; some elderly ppl remembered the last time it happened in the 1920s!
That's pretty cool; you have to be in the right area too otherwise you may not see a full eclipse or just a little bit of shade.

With the sun eclipse, it can be a bit of a hazard, though; like for teachers, employers being liable if they invite students or employees to take a look, and then they damage their eyes while looking at the eclipse.

I know can be dangerous; our school always used to warn us when it was sunny not to look at the sun, even with sunglasses.

I heard about a place in France where the local mayor was handing out dark glasses to ppl before an expected eclipse: a British visitor, used to all the liability stuff from politicians, was pretty impressed by the mayor's confidence that ppl wouldn't sue over it!

A very brave man; people in the UK wouldn't think twice of suing him.

Too right; people need to take responsibility of their own actions.
Trouble is; half the politicians are lawyers and for them it's natural to go around lawyering rather than living 'naturally'. (But I guess I'm going off at a tangent a bit from the theme of the thread.)

A little haha.
I see your point though.

The broader subject of astronomy is very interesting, though. I expect you remember the TV pictures from the Space Shuttle, when you never really know whether it's night or day. (I remember some of the Apollo flights.)

I do, I couldn't cope with that not knowing of night or day.

I think it's all part of the astronaut's rigorous training to get used to being disoriented about the time, and disrupted sleep patterns. It's bad enough crossing the Pond in an airliner! :)

I don't mind flying, but I couldn't even do the training where they spin you round and round, I'd be sick.

Did you do an overnight Atlantic flight yet? particularly from west east the time difference can be quite disruptive sometimes.

I did in 1999 -2000 when we went to Florida.
Bit of jet lag then.
