  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Another sign of hope is that Monkeypox appears to be far less lethal, as there have only been 5 deaths globally WHO Chief: 18,000 Monkeypox Cases Worldwide

Yes, this strain is not as lethal. There is another strain that is more lethal, and in that regard we were lucky.

Also, some of the deaths previously were perhaps due to less capable supportive care in endemic countries.

However, unlike COVID, Monkeypox has historically been more severe in children. To date few children have contracted it. Let's hope it stays that way.

Monkeypox: WHO chief advises men who have sex with men to reduce partners to limit exposure to virus - CNN

The vast majority of cases in the growing monkeypox outbreak are among men who have sex with men, according to the World Health Organization. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus advised members of this community Wednesday to limit their exposure to the virus by reducing their number of sex partners and reconsidering sex with new partners.
"This is an outbreak that can be stopped if countries, communities and individuals inform themselves, take the risk seriously and take the steps needed to stop transmission and protect vulnerable groups. The best way to do that is to reduce the risk of exposure. That means making safe choices for yourself and others.
"For men who have sex with men, this includes, for the moment, reducing your number of sexual partners, reconsidering sex with new partners and exchanging contact details with any new partners to enable followup, if needed," Tedros said at a briefing.

The World Health Organization on Wednesday recommended that gay and bisexual men limit their number of sexual partners to protect themselves from monkeypox and help slow transmission of the rapidly spreading virus.

The WHO’s monkeypox expert, Rosamund Lewis, said men who have sex with men are the group at the highest risk of infection right now. About 99% of cases are among men, and at least 95% of those patients are men who have sex with men, Lewis said.

With these latest numbers I think the US is now firmly in the lead going forward. Spain still leads considerably in cases per million, however.

Monkeypox: First deaths outside Africa in Brazil and Spain

A 41-year-old man in Brazil became the first fatality from the virus outside Africa. Spain announced two deaths soon afterwards - the first in Europe.

On Friday Brazil's health ministry said the victim there had suffered from lymphoma and a weakened immune system, and "comorbidities aggravated his condition".

Shortly afterwards, Spain's health ministry confirmed Europe's first death from the virus - a patient who suffered from encephalitis.

The health ministry said that of 3,750 monkeypox patients with available information, 120 or 3.2% had been hospitalised.

Gov Newsom declares a state of emergency in California over monkeypox outbreak

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday declared a state of emergency in California over the spread of the monkeypox virus in order to “bolster the state’s vaccination efforts.”

The proclamation makes it easier for the state to coordinate its response to the outbreak by ordering all state agencies to follow the direction of the Office of Emergency Services and the California Department of Public Health. The order also boosts vaccination efforts by allowing EMS workers to administer vaccines, which remain in short supply.

OurWorldInData has started to list the date for the data in each country. It makes it a bit harder to paste lists, but perhaps gives a better idea of how things lag in some areas.

Yes we are stupid here in the US, can you change to a log plot so we can see if any progress is being made?

Part of it is a function of greater population, when looked at per million Spain stands out more. But our trajectory seems worse.

Here is the log plot:

Well percentage of the population would be nice for other reasons but your plot demonstrates well that the world and the European countries are attacking the problem but the US is still growing at aa simple exponential rate indicating that we have not done anything significant yet.

Yes, and we are starting to catch up even when looking at a per capita basis:
